I am a noewcomer to phase, I am still learning, but from what I've read so far, this guy must be a phase guru, because I don't think there are a lot of people out there capable of fine tunning a 5 stager correctly. This seems just, very complicated.

thats right, but it isn`t easy at all. I`m working on this since few weeks on my stage and in needs much finetuning. R50 is a strange and difficult refrigerant but it is interesting to work with :D

The refigerant means are injected into the evaporator Collecting to themselves like with a pot LN2 below. I Having the design electively around later an Capacity regulation to use and to compensate temperature variations
This beast is absolutely the sickest cascade I have ever seen. Best of luck with building this monster! But I also think your evap is pretty inefficient.

there are "only" 5 compressors.
four blue maneurop compressors in the lower level and one rotary on top.
the other black things you can see are expansion tanks to lower the pressure of the stages when the unit is off.

Well I guess that was sarcastic, I know that before TXV people often mount receivers, but I have always thought that in receivers inlet should be at lower level that outlet - in way like Unrockstar did it, how it can accumulate any liquid ?
lol! The outlet should be at the lowest point. How can a receiver accumulate when the the output is on the top? The TEV need liquid refrigerant.
Get a refrigeration book, there are detailed pictures...

the outlet is on the lowest point.
if you buy a receiver there is also a standpipe which goes to the bottom of the receiver. this often ends on top of the receiver because of the rotalock to make the pipes at one point lockable.
so i don´t realy understand where you see any problems.

Piotres after a bit of thinking i know what you mean. But after all the inlet is on the top side and the outlet of a receiver is on the bottom.
You mean that in this case there is the danger that the gasous and the liquid wont unmix/seperate, do you?
It's better than nothing.
If he wouldn't use those small receivers, in idle the plate HX would fill with refrigerant and this "removes" surface for condensing.
To bad there are no sightglasses for -120°C @ min. 20bar :D , he could show use that it works.

The only stage that should ever have absolutely no load in normal operating conditions though would be the final stage with the direct-die evaporator.
I enjoy looking at this build in the same way I enjoy looking at people build huge skyscrapers. I don't quite recognize everything but it's still awesome to look at. Need shots from further away so we can trace piping and understand what is a compressor and what's an expansion tank :D

Yes maybe at start I wrote that in bad way, I mean that outlet IMO should not be at absolutelly lowest point like it's ..becasue from mine point of view those acumulator doesn't acumulate anything, refrigerant will just go too fast to pipe after receiver .
Look at chilly1's drawing of receiver on this scheme :

The reciever still has to accumulate liquid before it can exit the tube. Not so in -EC-UnRockStar's, it just acts like a wide tube which the liquid quickly flows through. I get what he's saying, but im sure -EC-'s way will work fine, just not function exactly as an accumulator should.
aenigma
02-10-2009, 04:26 PM
It isn't an accumulator, it's a receiver, but I think that was just a typo. His way will work fine, exceptional really and I will get to why soon. First off you must know a receiver's purpose is to add internal volume for liquid storage so it doesn't back up into the condenser under varying loads. There isn't any secret science behind it or anything, so any old design will usually work fine.
On the other hand this is where his design is great and seems to be thought out very well. A standard receiver has a pickup line at the bottom which requires the large receiver to fill enough to get a liquid seal on the liquid line, which means extra refrigerant is required. But with his receivers the bottom of the receiver doesn't have to have enough liquid before the liquid line pickup starts picking up liquid, and that is great for a cascade. The less refrigerant the better the static pressure. Keeping the area on high side as small as possible, especially on the liquid line, is a good idea and good practice. Although it probably isn't required with his large expansion tanks, it's still a good idea.
Awesome project too, it is looking awesome, you've got too much cool stuff!

Hi, I just love the size and complexity of your build! very good.
A Maneurop compressor in bits, seen plenty of them whilst fault finding. Most failed Maneurop I come across all die due to poor superheat, they seem to be very sensitive to it causing either lack of oil or dilution which ultimatly causes lock up.
