I finally bought a new sound card to replace my PCI XFi Extreme Gamer, an Asus *PCI-E* Xonar D2X, trouble is I'm on the point of ordering a second HD 4870 512 for Crossfire as well, on my motherboard, the Asus X48 Rampage Formula, this leaves me few options with a second 4870 fitted.
There is the top black PCI-E slot on this board, and I've heard you can fit this card to that slot, but it may be too long and hang over my ram slots?
Anyone know?
I know the card could be fitted to my second x 16 PCI-E slot, but I'd like to leave this free for the second HD 4870 that i really want to buy next week for Crossfire too.
This leaves me with two final choices, there is a PCI-E slot for a single card just below my first HD 4870, the Xonar would fit there, but it would be a tight fit with a second 4870 right below it ... Does any one know if this will work? and if there would be any cooling issues? My case has a 120 fan blowing over those areas.
I hope I've described what i mean OK :)
My only other option is to just hang with this Xonar and have the more slot placement options i guess ... a single HD 4870 x 2 or even GTX 280 or higher is out of the question just now.
