Im trying to install windows xp pro in my dads computer. Everything is fine untill it starts to copy setup files. I get to 7% and it hangs on cinemst2.sys. I cleaned the disc and still nothing. I tried to googles this problem but didnt come up with anything. Any idea's on how to resolve this?

use a diff disc or if u have an ISO back-up, re-write it.

Aside from running out of disk space, I can't think of reason that should happen.

If the disk is bad, I would expect a read error rather than a hang.

When you say you cleaned the disk, what do you mean exactly?

Are you booting from the install disk? If not, the problem may be with the existing operating system. Try to get a boot image of the install disk - shouldn't be too hard to find. Your cd key should work if it is the same version but I won't swear that part.

Another possibility is that the disk is corrupt and the sector it is trying to write that file to is bad, so to be safe, run a scan on the disk and make sure to specify that bad sectors should be marked.

I have a disc cleaning tool that has worked wonders. I used that to clean it completly.

I have an oem xp pro cd that im booting from. The drive is 100% empty, just a single drive in the machine. No errors on the drive with a scan.

Everything shows 100% working status. One thing I did try tho is to load up windows 7 and vista. Neither of em would make it any farther. Both froze up in the beginning stages as well. Reason I had to format was because my dad got a new motherboard for his machine so I was getting it all setup. Its a Gigabyte ep45-ud3r. I used the book and went through every line in the bios to set it up so not really sure were to go from here. I am gonna make a iso of the xp cd and try that next.

no point making an ISO of what might be a bugged disc

Well it made it farther with the iso. Now it stops at the cyycoins.chm file at 9%. This is really starting to piss me off.

assuming the CD is original ...

either DVD/CD-Drive has read problems ... though it normally occurs on old CD-Drives

why don't you try this method?
1. load the XP CD
2. proceed to "Repair"
3. select default keyboard
4. on dos prompt/interface, type "chkdsk"

let's just hope it's not bad sectors ...

This starting to sound like a hardware issue that's giving you install problems. Have you memtested the machine?

Backup hd failed to. For the hell of it I took 4 gigs of ram from my system and stuck it in, now its working flawless. I gotta say, im absolutely done with crucial now. This is the 3rd computer in the past year to have a problem and its always been the crucial memory. What happened to them? They used to be top notch back a few years ago. Back in the AMD k8 days.

wow, never would have guessed the memory - not for such a consistent failure.

BTW - congrats!
