View Full Version : Vista vs Windows 7 ?
I always was an advocate of Vista, but after re-installing it again on a dual boot XP system, I'm getting quite fed up of it, this is with Vista Sp1 and all updates, BTW.
I'm now left thinking that Vista is to Microsoft like Windows Millennium was to XP ... its just a stop gap OS.
I hear MS are working on Vista Sp2, but looking at time scales, looks like waiting for the release date of Windows 7 might be a better bet.
I've tried to like Vista, really I have, but it has some insurmountable quirks that I just cant be bothered to live with and some of them I'm still looking for workarounds.
I'm now back to a dual boot XP SP3 and XP SP3 system, tailored to my needs.
True 64 bit Os can wait until Windows 7 comes out, hopefully it was what Vista was meant to be.
Just like Millennium was supposed to be what XP was.
Go figure.

Windows Millennium was released because Microsoft decided to drag their feet on the Neptune and Whistler programs, which they finally merged to form the basis of XP. I am a Server 2003 user (XP Pro x64) myself, but even microsoft agrees with what you are saying just by looking at the codenames.
Windows XP was codenamed Whistler, after the Whistler-Blackcomb a hotel/resort in Canada.
Windows 7 was previously codenamed Blackcomb, before they changed it to Vienna.
Windows Vista was codenamed Longhorn, after a bar in the relative center of the hotel.
So Microsoft intended to move directly from Whistler to Blackcomb, with a short stopoff at the longhorn on the way...

Q. What is the expected timeline for the availability of Windows 7?
A. We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and expect it will take approximately 3 years to develop. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release.
3 years is a long time to wait.

When it's ready, NT6.1 will be out. Till then, enjoy NT6.0.

I like NT5.2 personally (XP Professional x64/Server 2003), much better than I did NT5.1 or NT5. I really like Server 2008 though, thats a nice OS.

I like what i see in W7 thus far, it feels snappier and the menus look nice, not a huge difference from Vista....more like tweaked.

I've tried to like Vista, really I have, but it has some insurmountable quirks that I just cant be bothered to live with ...QFT! though there's just one quirk that i have noticed. it's still a big pita though. whenever i create a new folder, then it's contents are displayed in a random view. i wan't all my files to be displayed in the "details" view. but no, i have to look at 2inch wide PDF logos, or columns that try to explain artist and album of my .rar files. a friend of mine has the exact same problem with his install of vista x64 SP1. why the :banana::banana::banana:ing :banana::banana::banana: hasn't anybody fixed that by now!?
... and then there's of course the ridiculous waste of system memory.

it seems like windows 7 is like obama. everybody want's it to be a success, because it's predecessor sucked so bad!

...about halfway down the page, under 1. Constantly Changing Folder Views
This also works for Windows 7.
As far as Windows 7 vs Windows Vista goes, I'll add my 2c and say that I like Windows 7 much more than Vista. I purchased a copy of Vista, installed it, worked with it/tweaked it for a few weeks, and went back to XP. It felt sluggish, even on 6gb of ram. There were things I liked about the Vista GUI, but the bads outweighed the goods. Going back to XP the difference in performance was noticeable.
Windows 7 on the other hand feels faster than XP. It's not a "oh I think this feels faster" kind of thing... it's "Wow, this is very noticeably faster." Note that I mean general OS performance, not necessarily gaming. I'm sure 7 is behind XP and probably even Vista when it comes gaming due to immature drivers, etc. 7 also got rid of most if not all the annoyances I had with Vista. It feels like they took the speed of XP, combined it with the GUI of Vista, and fixed the annoyances. Can't wait till the final release.

It's cosmetic...sure, but nice cosmetics...it improves upon Vista, but i still won't upgrade until Windows 7 SP1 retail on DVD.

not based on MS's usual 2-3 year OS release cycle prior to XP which was around for 7 years now.... WIndows 7 is back in tune with their past release schedule.

i liked vista, it had problems with chines code, NV not supporting it affter they expanded market share and with intel saying ether we wont support it ,or u have to give our IGP vista approval. affter sp1 and the kernel was completely redone redmond its good now, but im enjoying server 08.
im also glad that MS delayed server 07 a year and renamed it 08 so they got clean code and R2 is on the shared kernel with win7. but if u look at the early papers on vista sp2 its the same features as 7 and it should just make it so they are vary similar and vistas name will just die out

i know, what i implied was that hes better off going with Vista Sp2 rather than wait for 7.
3 years was the target on the MS website when i posted that btw.

these topics about Vista will never end, I’m using it…it’s ok, indexing is stupid though, and the all programs section in start menu, anyway it’s better than xp, xp is ok btw
