Software Audit

I need some help with getting a list of all the software installed on the users computers at work.
There are +- 400 users. The OS's range from some really old Windows 2000 machines, but mostly XP.
Now i need to be able to install the software remotely maybe run a script that will install it as they log in?
I have had a look at Belarc and would just want to know if there are other free alternatives (the whole credit crunch is a bugger).

Any advice is welcome, and speak slowly :p: my brain doesn't work well during the week. :D

We usually use the free version of Belarc but if you have 400 user that could be time consuming. There is an enterprise version thats lot faster but costs $$.
