Works great, fast reliable. No driver problems yet.
I even like the new taskbar :)

I'm having problems with it. Programs open in the background, instead of the fore-, some programs won't open at all once installed, I can't open my hard drives...Other than that, it's pretty good.

Hi all, I've just downloaded the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Beta. I haven't pulled the trigger yet on installing it, because I want to get some hardware issues taken care of first. My wireless NIC only has drivers for Windows XP (It's an older 802.11g NIC, I've got a new 802.11n router recently so I'll be purchasing a newer draft N adapter soon). I'm also wondering how I can install this on a RAID-0 Array? What's everyone's experience with that? I've never been through the install process of any Windows later than XP. So will I need a floppy drive to be able to install RAID drivers? Or have they improved to looking at other locations besides the A: drive?
I'm really interested in playing with this OS, but I'm not going to dig myself into a hole without consulting others who've installed this first.
Thanks for your time, all. :)

Actually, I just got it to work by saving the latest Vista driver to my desktop then simply running the setup file in compatibility mode for Vista. Works like a charm. I'm really liking Windows 7 so far... Nice and quick.

Anyone have any ideas how to get the Creative X-Fi drivers up? I tried the latest Vista drivers but it doesn't fly. I have the Soundblaster X-Fi Elite Pro, btw.
I'm running Win 7 64 bit. My soundcard is X-Fi Xtreme Music. I downloaded the most recent (jan 2009) drivers for Vista 64 bit, the most recent console launcher and the most recent version of ALChemy. I installed all under Vista compatibility mode because I got the "OS not supported" message otherwise.
I'm running 4.1 sound. Until I set my speakers to 4.1 in the Windows sound applet, I did not get sound from all speakers, regardless of Creative console settings. Once I got it right in windows, creative console saw all 4 speakers.
ALchemy seems to hang CODWAW when shutting down COD. I found that once I set my Entertainment mode to 4.1, I began to get all 4 speakers in COD working without running ALChemy. I removed COD from the selection list in ALChemy and made sure that the DSxxx files were not in the COD folder. I was glad to see all 4 speakers working without ALChemy.
Movies and MP3's play and sound fine using Creative's entertainment mode. The EAX selection for music works as well.
So far, I'm pretty impressed with 7. I've never used VISTA. Home networking, file transfers and gaming has worked real well so far. Regarding gaming, graphics look more vibrant in 7 than XP and I get higher min frames in 7 than XP. At this point, there seems to be no loss in gaming performance going from XP to 7. I really like the much snappier feel that 7 has.
Edit:
It seems for gaming that if you want surround sound, set creative console to entertainment mode. I'm having a bit of a time of with ALchemy. World in Conflict will play in surround sound in entertainment mode, but not in gaming mode with Alchemy. Same with CODWAW single player. ALChemy seems to work with CODWAW MP.

Well, i fixed the driver problems, so i can say that from hardware point of view, its ok now.
About speed, i dont feel it is to be faster than vista sp2 (both x64), but vista is installed on a scsi raid, while w7 is on a samsung f1.
About interface, i do NOT like the taskbar. fixed icons confuse with minimized apps, there is no show desktop button. Other things are improved, such as paint, uac (usable at min level not disabled), color correction, libraries.

My x64 install got corrupted so i fired the x32, which seems completely stable. ie8 beta is still a pachiderm, but the rest works like a charm.

OS is fairly stable no driver issues
IE8 locks a lot - less if I remember to hit compatability each time I open a page
MagicDrive locks the system until its uninstalled - It did this for me in Vista once before and a re-install fixed it. Re-install does not fix it for Windows 7.
Logmein doesn't install

I've been considering putting it on my system but I read that the crossfire mode is not supported as ms says its unstable.. I have a saphyre 4870x2 paired w/ an asus 4870 dark knight 3 gigs combined DDR ram I have the x2 which doesn't require x-fire as it's built in but I'd lose the single for x-fire right??
I installed it on my laptop sys which is running flawlessly.. Overall I think MS has a winner here..

Amazingly enough, after about a year of using various builds of Windows 7 on my notebook, I have to admit that it seems that Microsoft might have really got it right this time. Not only is Windows 7 far faster than Vista, it looks much nicer, has better features, and from what most of my "less than computer savvy" friends say after playing around on my notebook... it's way more user friendly.
That aside... the OS needs a little better driver support, but that will obviously improve dramatically as the OS gets closer to release. There still isn't a driver for the biometric (fingerprint) scanner on my Dell XPS M1530. But other than that, every component has a driver (some beta).
I'll be buying (if i don't get a copy from MS) Windows 7 when it's released, but I'll still be dual booting Mac OSx86 Leopard on my notebook. For some reason, some things in Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Premier in the Mac OS that are just flat out faster.

i'd like to try it on a p3 with 256 ram (i've a fast 2gb sandisk pendrive which i want to use with readyboost), but i think that win7 refuses to install with less than 512mb of ram. i've tried with the "setup.exe /nosyscheck" that works with vista, but it didn't work. i have also tried using the patched winsetup.dll, but nothing.
if i use vlite to remove the system requirements check, will it install?

I did have problems with Explorer freezing all the time, and funny as it is i discovered firefox (a bit late).. WTH firefox ownes hard, never had anything else then explorer running, I hope when 7 will be released it will come without explorer...

the beta 1 isn't build 7000?
do you mean that you use windows 7 torrent edition :p: ?
here is the INFO for the build im now useing.....Windows 7 Ultimate 7025 [FreeLeech]....Information:
This is leaked version from build 7014 and fix some bugs, not by
Micrsoft.Despite the success of the Windows 7 beta, which got leaked
before it was officially released and had several deadline extensions,
Microsoft isn't exactly sitting still. The beta build, with build
number 7000, was built on December 12th, 2008, so that leaves enough
room between then and now for several newer builds. One such build got
leaked this weekend, and it contains some minor changes compared to
the beta build.
Several newer builds have been confirmed, namely 7003, 7004, 7012,
7015, 7016, and the leaked 7025, with the last one obviously being
the newest; it was built on January 20th (at 18:50, if you're that
interested). According to Ars Technica, it contains several bug fixes,
as well as a number of visual changes in applications like Paint and
Windows Media Player. It also comes with an updated build of Internet
Explorer 8, and the screenshots over at PCBETA show quicklaunch - but
don't be fooled, quicklaunch can be enabled on Windows 7 beta as well
through a registry hack. For legacy reasons, Windows 7 still contains
the quicklaunch folder (I'm guessing some installation programs
complained about the lack of the folder).
The 7025 build can be obtained by the way of the pirate, but you might
as well keep on using the stable and well-tested beta until Microsoft
releases the Windows 7 release candidate somewhere between now and
release-to-manufacturing, scheduled for late 2009 or early 2010.

Well I would use it but it refuses to grab a DHCP address from my router. It worked fine for a while while I installed some base stuff, but after one restart and ever since it has refused to work at all. Oh well, I guess another few years of XP 32 are ahead.
I was having issues with file transfers over SMB, but they just released the hotfix for that. I'm still scared to use Adobe bridge to look at images on my file server though. The thumb rendering was causing BSOD. When I did this with picassa, I had to reinstall as it corrupted the OS>

http://i.gizmodo.com/5225374/hackers-claim-they-created-unfixable-windows-7-exploit
Security researchers demonstrated how to take control of a computer running Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 operating system at the Hack In The Box Security Conference (HITB) in Dubai on Thursday.
Researchers Vipin Kumar and Nitin Kumar used proof-of-concept code they developed, called VBootkit 2.0, to take control of a Windows 7 virtual machine while it was booting up. They demonstrated how the software works at the conference.
"There's no fix for this. It cannot be fixed. It's a design problem," Vipin Kumar said, explaining the software exploits the Windows 7 assumption that the boot process is safe from attack.
While VBootkit 2.0 shows how an attacker can take control of a Windows 7 computer, it's not necessarily a serious threat. For the attack to work, an attacker must have physical access to the victim's computer. The attack can not be done remotely.
VBootkit 2.0, which is just 3KB in size, allows an attacker to take control of the computer by making changes to Windows 7 files that are loaded into the system memory during the boot process. Since no files are changed on the hard disk, VBootkit 2.0 is very difficult to detect, he said.

so, any thoughts about the RC so far?
edit: I heard today for the first time, may be because I don't follow Win7 so closely, there would be an RC2 in August, anyone can confirm?

No chance of a RC2. One Beta, One RC, Then RTM. That's all the public gets.

that's what I thought too, so I don't know where they got it from where I saw that  don't know where that was anymore, they talked about a 7200 build for RC2...so probably BS.

iirc I think i've seen the same thing. I remember public RC + RC2 = build 7100 + 7200 and all the in-between builds are based on those.. :)
also isn't there a build 7106/7 out already in china?

Nope it's disabled, unless you change a file on the disk
what I did was copied the disk to HD then in (disk):\sources\cversion.ini? (i think its that 99%) change the top build number from either 7077 or 7100.... to 7000 =) then it'll be ok to install over :)

it's no problem if you upgrade from 7077 to 7100 RC,because the 7077 is the same, let's see, the 7077 is the RC ESCROW,internal use in microsoft,so this same version with a little internal tweaks became in 7100.
so if you have any build later to 7077 (7068,7057,7022,7000) is strongely recommendable that format your hard drive...if you have 7077,just update all run fine.

guys, there was a new feature concerning power management for the hard disks when running Seven: "AHCI link power management". I use to have it in the beta, but for some reason not anymore in the RC.
AHCI is still enabled in the bios, and the registry key that shows it was detected by the OS is set to the correct value: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci (start=0). If AHCI wasn't detected anyway the OS wouldn't boot. So the question is, do you guys still have the setting available in power management in the RC ?

Anyone noticing how some monitors default to 59hz instead of 60hz?
I tried it with 2, a 19inch dell and a 24inch HP, the dell sets to 60hz fine, but the HP sets to 59, and when setting it to 60 it doesn't really apply it (just says it did, when you go back in it is still at 59hz, this is with and without the manufacturer's monitor driver), from what Ive been reading this seems to be some common thing about how Win 7 reads the info chip in the monitors, if the hz number in the chip rounds down instead of up it will set it to 59, when normally it would default to 60.
guessing thats with Nvidia cards?

On average about 30% usage from 4Gb. The system uses a lot more resources than XP but seems to be quicker and slicker, the 2 biggies appear to be the Aero interface (dwm.exe) and Searchindexer.exe after that it is a lot of smaller stuff.
I used to have about 30 processes running on XP but there are now 50 on Windows 7

You want to know the sad thing about windows 7 x64 build 7137? It just like vista x64 still does support installing to GPT partitions. That means your going to have to keep a hard drive around that is less than or equal to 2TB.

I've been using Windows 7 as my main OS for about 4-5 months and I love it! It has been very fast and stable. It's running the programs I need. I still use XP x64 but not alot now as microsoft looked around for programs that didn't work on the beta release they worked on it and made it work witht the RC but not all.... :(
I think Vista is what Win 7 should of been but they released Vista too early.....
