I'm curious, is anyone running Windows 7 x64 (Build 7000) with a 4870?

I just got my 4870 in from RMA, and up until then I had been beta testing Windows 7 with an old 7900 GTX. NVIDIA's Windows 7 drivers worked fine, and even the Vista drivers worked under compatibility mode.

However, now that I have my 4870, I can't seem to get any Catalyst driver to install. I've tried the standard Vista x64 8.12s from the ATI website, and this Windows 7 preview driver, also on ATI's website:

http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894

I'm having no luck. Running the 8.12s under Vista compatibility mode just locks up after I attempt to install in the setup process. The same thing happens with the Windows 7 preview driver. I'm currently running the WDDM driver downloaded from Windows Update.

Anyone else in my situation have any luck?

I run that in the 32-bit, not x64. I got my copy of Windows 7 beta a couple weeks ago and there was no x64 at the time. I might give x64 a go soon though so I can try the drivers out then. Oh, and I am using the Windows 7 preview drivers for x32

Apparently this problem roots all the way back to Vista (maybe XP too). I don't think anyone is really sure what causes it, but there is an easy workaround, you just have to install through the command line.

I don't know the cause but my X2 is working under vista x64 and windows 7.

4870 single and crossfire works fine here using both 32 bit and 64 bit Win 7.

I too am having this problem and tried all that you did with no luck. Do you know how to install them from a command line?
