I have heard it said that the default windows defrag tool is not a very good tool for actualy defragmenting your HDD. So what 3rd party software would the community here recommed for this task?

UltraDefrag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraDefrag) and JkDefrag (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JkDefrag) are excellent open source options.

I read somewhere that a lot of these programs still use the same api/calls or w/e and just have a different GUI. don't really have a link with me :P just food for thought if anyone cares enough to look it up.

I have always used VOPTXP, I bought a license for it about three years ago and use it on every XP install I get my hands on.

Small application, very straight forward, allows you to make other changes and cleaning options and usually way faster (largely depending in drive speed) then windows scan disk and as a favor to friends when I work on their PCs I apply the reg key to give them full access to the application so they can run scan when ever they want. (30 day trial period from site)

I use ver 7.22
(my license from 3 years ago is still valid as well)

I have always used VOPTXP

That's a new one to me. I purchased DiskKeeper from ExecutiveSoft about 6or 7 years ago. Used it all the time with XP, however, I get MMC snap-in errors with SP3. I starterd using Auslogics free defragger and it works great. I do miss being able to do a boot time defrag, but the you can't beat the price of Auslogic. I ought to check out VOPTXP.

Is there a version for VISTA 64 bit?

I use Diskeeper 2009 Pro on my XP Pro SP3 (32 bit) systems. 100% happy with it's performance and options. Best of all: fully automatic defrag....set once and forget.

Check their site, I posted prior. I think there is a newer version out.

thanks all auslogics looks good to me !
used to use iobit (on my 160 gig sata not my ssd) but thiers is a prob with it if you have it shut down comp after completing it's job

how about the "auslogics boot speed" is it wourth downloading ? would it mess up my ssd like defragging would ?
