Weird problem with new directx hard-locking the system in non-games.

Recently, I installed Bioshock through Steam. At the end of the install, the DirectX installer popped up. I hit cancel because I had already been playing Crysis and had assumed my DX10 was up to date. After this, Bioshock would then crash on load. After going to the MS website and getting the web-installer for DX, it went through with the install and Bioshock worked fine (and always has since).

The problem though, is that now, windows media player will randomly lock the entire system when playing a video. Going through a folder of pictures taken with a digital camera using the windows photo gallery program, when you come across a video, about 75% of the time it will play and 25% of the time it will hang... and 3 seconds later the mouse stops moving, cpu graph in task manager freezes. Reset needed.

Also, running Google Earth in DirectX can lock the system just the same, but OpenGL does not.

Any advice on this issue? I'm not sure where to start looking.

System is in sig, running Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
