E8400 / P45 / 4GB DDR2 / GTX 260 / 20" 1650 / 650 watt / 250GB sataII
~$700

I'm on a budget so any comments will help before i press the "buy" button. Would you change or modify any of the choices? I did consider 4850 x-fire + dual slot p45 for an extra $65. I already have a thermalright ultra 120 - cpu will be lapped :) all parts overclocked!!!:yepp:

thanks
:p:

i wouldnt trust a build like that to that particular power supply. go with quality when you are buying the heart for your rig

aside from that, not a bad build

maybe you could find a cheaper 260 and put more to a better power supply.

corsair FTW!

I would not suggest 4850 Crossfire on a P45 chipset. You'll be severely limited by the PCI-E x8 bus. The GTX 260 should be just fine, especially if you overclock it. As pirateghost said, I would go with another brand of power supply, preferably PC Power & Cooling or Corsair.

Why not get a 4870 instead of the GTX 260? It's the same price (and cheaper if you use the MIR) and faster in just about everything.

Go for a 4870, in the future, you will be able to crossfire it on the board (depending on how price changes of course, might not be worth it but just to upgrade to a better single one)

Also, dont trust that brand for the power supply neither. Go for Corsair, Antec, Silverstone etc

Good points and I second a corsair psu. I have had my one and its been utterly amazing.

different psu, and dont get that seagate HDD get a 320GB they are the same price and u get more storage + way faster, i would go samsung or WD but seagate has one too, but WD and samsung are both faster and more reliable and cooler

edit actually $5 cheaper

sweet so things to consider:

4870
different psu
different / faster HDD
x-fire motherboard / non p45

Thanks for the helpful insight! - anyone have any comments on purchasing "open box" items? Truthfully i was wagering the 4870 512 for 179 AR vs. the 260 192sp for $199...

I chose the 260 in the end thinking i could get a lot of OC headroom out of it. the 4870 does seem to be more powerful in games where nv hasn't monopolized driver development - like WAW.

Haven't had any problems purchasing open box items yet. Just make sure you they have a 30-day refund or something in case something does go wrong.

Different PSU is not something to CONSIDER. ITS A MUST. Not intimately familair with PSU these days but something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

Use the rebate and its $80

Memory: That A-Data does not have free shipping so add about another $6-8 for shipping makes it about $42-45. If you toss in another $5-10 for memory you can get some G'Skill DDR1000 with the same timings as the A-Data
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231145

If you can handle another rebate $20 you can get some Muskin DDR1000 with better timings as that A-Data for the same price after MIR

A CPU, case, and/or refrence model vid cards by whatever manufacturer are thing that you can buy the cheapest available. PSU are not. Make sure you buy a good quality PSU and I would say that you will want to spend at minimum, bare minimum $70-80 on one. Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, Seasonic... GOOD BRANDS. Dont F@#K around when buying a psu. Just get a good one and know it wont be the problem. Well... you'll be fairly certain it isnt the problem. They do have duds once in a while.

Memory considerations:

GSkill, same specs and price, FREE SHIPPING, so less at the bottom line

Ballistix!!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148212

You like A-Data? These are probably a bit better, maybe, maybe not But are about the same price considering free shipping
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211282

These Muskins look like a nice deal. $25 after Rebate with better specs

4GB Patriot Viper, I personally like green, but tastes vary. 2GB Flash drive and 3dMark Vantage included on these two:

I have owned both and the 4870 isnt faster than a 260.

Thats not true. In fact its just the opposite. AND!! The GTX 260's OC like mad. Mine, undervolted to 1.06v does about 740core, 1550shader, and 1200+mem. And at 100% fan speed never breaks 60C. Stayed at a 58C but its noisy. Drop the fan to 70-80% so as to be extremely tolerable and the temps were about 68C and at 40% (less than ambient computer noise) it was in the 70'sC.

Get a 4870 for future crossfire if you want, but it isnt more powerful than a 260. Keep in mind, they are very close, so if the 4870 is cheaper then it may be worth it in terms of $/performance. And as for the the differences between 216 and 192 shader processors, from my testing of two exact same cards, EVGA GTX 260's, 216 and 192 sp models. The difference was about 3%. Or specifically, when OC'ed to identicle speeds the difference was about 500 marks at 17K marks. 192sp = 17400marks in 3DMark06, and 216sp = 17900 marks.
