Hi

I have one fast 320Gb single platter drive and an 40GB ide drive.

If i put virtual mem, cache(s) temp files in the 40Gb slow drive will be better than just using only the 320Gb one ?

I thought it might be, for parallelism reasons.

Am I wrong ?

I was going to install the OS's in the 320Gb drive and put all the temps, cache, pagefile etc in the 40Gb one but decided to ask here first, since im not an storage expert :)

Help me asap please, i wanna do it tomorow :) thanks guys, happy holly days !!

I don't think there is an easy/correct answer to your question; It all depends on how much I/O load you have on the drives.
For example if you use bittorrent allot and down/upload files to the large drive you might be better off with the both OS and pagefile etc on the slow drive. On the other hand if you have very little I/O load you should probably put everything on the fast harddrive.

 u've got it totally the wrong way. *especially* the last sentence. high IOPs = need high IOPs capable HDD, thus the fast HDD :fact:
Definitely keep the OS & Apps on the 'fast' 320GB HDD :yepp:

How about pagefile/virtual mem, temp folders and cache from some progs ?

Running this stuff in the 40Gb IDE driver would make things better or worse ?

I thought it would be better, coz this stuff would be running in parallel... en if the HD is slowe than the main 320Gb hd that will store OS, games

My primary concern is windows snappiness, and games :)

Both I & a friend of mine have tried it (seperate HDD for page file etc) - either of us have 'felt' a diff.. maybe neithre of us thrash our HDD sub-system enough

if u cannot possibly find another use for the 40GB HDD, do it, u got nothing to lose & everything to gain

Thanks bro's !

I guess Ill try both ways until i find out what i like better :)

Will try using the 40Gb hd for secondary stuff first.

Wish happiness for u all !

Yeah...thats what i was speculating.....

And I am assuming pagefile etc does not need high IOPs....so they may run in parallel in the 40Gb drive without compromises :)

Update!

Its running very well so far, using the fast drive for windows and games while using the slower drive for fixed size pagefile, windows temp forlders and browser cache :)

Just an question tho..... Does creating some partitions have any kind of negative effect ?

 on which drive & what is on those partitions?

320Gb drive:

10Gb partition for win xp

20Gb partition for vista 64 (nothing installed in it yet, i dont have vista yet)

290Gb partition for storage, programs etc.

40Gb drive:

10Gb partition for 4Gb fixed size pagefile, windows temp folders and browser cache.

30Gb partition to test random stuff untill i get vista. It will hold vista temps, cache etc...

The real question is, is it faster this way ? or should i just use the 320Gb one.. Fells good so far, Ill test more latter.

keep in mind that with this ^ config, it will be gest for boot but ur program start-up times, level loading etc etc will not be optimal.
u gotta decide between boot times & program/level loading times.

Why not optimal for progs/games loading times ?

The OS's, Games and apps are placed in the faster HD, while the 40Gb one holds only pagefile, temp folders and cache etc for both OS's and some apps.

PS: Im talking about post number 10 setup :)

I qouted just the 320GB HDD set-up - so I was referring purely *just* the set-up for that HDD ;)

if u want ur apps/levels to load faster, *1st* make a partition of whatever size u need for them, *then* make 2 partitions for the OSs..:

320GB:

xxGB 1st partition apps/games

10GB 2nd partition XP

20GB 3rd partition Vista

^ this config is optimal for app/level load, but boot suffers - hence why I said u gotta decide

ahh ok :)

Im better of with the first 30Gb of the drive filled with the OS's.....makes everything snappier it seems, i dont care if ill lose a sec in game loading times :)
