I'm curently running Vista Ultimate 32 and want to move up to Vista Ultimate 64.
What would be the best way togo about doing this and keep all of my current settings and programs?

I always like a clean install. Just backup everything and do a clean install. Or you can upgrade where it vista will let you upgrade to a new verision and then it will keep all your stuff or suppose to keep all your stuff, but you can not be for sure that it will all work, I bet most of it does, but you may run into a few that do not run on 64 bit.

you might be able to do the files and settings transfer but i dont think it will let you do a straight upgrade (well it wouldnt let me ) as the whole OS is fundamentaly different.
as above fresh is best . just did prem 32 to prem 64 today hmm more ram :)

Programs and files run the same - only device drivers need to be 64-bit.

You can't keep the settings but you can keep the programs, cause Win 64 bit has support for 32 bit also... Like said above, only the drivers need to be for 64 bit version and of course you could use some 64 bit applications, but 95% of Win applications are for 32 bit. Unless you have 4 Gb ram there's no point in moving to 64 bit, but if you do (have 4 gb ram) I'd recommend it. ;)

Wot? I thought it was necessary to do a clean install, meaning to say, reformat + install. But if you're right, then it's good news for me cos i plan to migrate to x64.. just that the whole reformat thing is a major turn off

32bit to 64bit you needs to reinstall...
64bit to another 64bit::::same as below....
32bit to another 32bit (ie: XP 32bit to Vista 32bit) you can do the upgrade install and keep all your stuffs as before, well. mostly, sometimes the upgrade path doesn't get it perfect, requiring a small amount of quality time to get it right...

I've had too many problems with upgrades and "repairs"...never again, always format and clean install.

I may be wrong about this, but if you have the VU upgrade to XP you need to have 32-bit installed in order to upgrade to 64-bit. No more just showing the install a CD like the old days. :shakes: The last time I installed VU64 I went from a clean install of XP/VU32 to VU64. As forgiving as Vista can be under these conditions I thought a clean install would work better in the long run.
