I am wondering if I can remove the side panel fan and the grill spider web design, and just keep the mesh in there?

From memory I dont think so - the mesh has a smal flange and is held in place by the fan. I ripped both out of mine and fitted an acrylic window.

The original parts are in the loft at the mo but I'll try and dig them out for some photos.
