I just upgraded to some nice and rather shinny ocz pc8000 4gb
booted up all fine ram runs good.
bios sees 4gb says 4gb available , load windoze so and check control panel 4gb so far so good.
enable PAE via bcdedit command , reboot and yet task man still says ive nly 2.8gb !!!
is ther some kind off issue with 780i chipset that cant do the whole address extension or do i need to change some bios setting to get it to work ?
failng that could i swap to 64bit and still keep my apps/games etc ?
thanks.

I would suggest changing over to 64-bit Vista.
Assuming you can find drivers for all of your hardware (nowadays, you almost always can), almost all 32-bit software runs just fine on 64-bit Windows.

yeah that what i will mostly end up doing , just annoyingas 32 is mena tobe able t see the 4gb with PAE enabled .

ya, any 32bit OS will read less then 3gb of ram, doesnt matter if its vista or not

No you will not get all 3gb like they said just do 64 bit. I will never use anything else other then 64 bit. Almost everything works with it now, there are still a few programs that dont but i hardly run into that problem anymore

Incorrect.
It can free extra memory but in 32bit you'll never see a full 4gb of ram.
Your running a 780i chipset and don't say what GPU(s) you have either.
Between the GPU(s) you have the nvidia chipset its of no surprise.

each 512MB graphics card has is mapped to sys ram (so 1024mb mapped)....then if you have a soundcard like x-fi it'll map another 64mb-128mb. What you see is what you have available to your 32bit OS. Like others have said, moving to 64bit would alleviate this and allow you to utilise the full 4gb of system ram.

personally I'd go with fresh install mate. afaik you can't upgrade from x86 to x64 but I may be wrong. I always prefer a fresh install though just to be sure everything is sweet. Like you said, it doesn't take long these days. I remember formats and installs from floppy and that was a nightmare :(
best of luck :)

I agree always better to do a full install than a upgrade as things are setup properly with no garbage left behind.

you should be able to get the 64bit upgrade for only 10 dollars and your key should work fine

it wont let u upgrade since your switching instructions, and your vista key will do x86 and x64 so u just need a 64bit disk and your good
