I just ordered my EEE PC 900A Yesterday  ...
It comes with Windows XP Home preinstalled, but I'm on the fence as to whether I should use Ubuntu instead. The last time I tried Ubuntu was about a year ago on my old desktop machine, and I really liked everything about it, especially terminal... the only reason I went back to XP was because I didn't want to deal with Dual-Booting XP and Linux and the Partition Junk (I couldn't back up my files in XP) that comes with it.
Most of the games are play run under Wine anyway... Though I would like the compatibility with everything that XP has...
Now that I've got a clean system, I can install whatever OS I want and not deal with partitions
So, I'm looking for reasons to go to one side or the other.

after 2 years it had taken me to change to linux I can really say that linux gives me less headache ;)
-no viruses
-more stable
-far better software management, no decrease in spead with more software and age
-a complete system after the basic installation
-a lot to play around with if I want :D
however, especially ubuntu is not that more stable, since it partly has kind of unstable packages. but gnome programs on the other hand always look the same, so no time wasted for transition to another program. but I like KDE more, since I can change a lot more via GUI :) 3.5 so far, 4.2 still lacks a lot of options.
ps: there are a lot of howtos and even special kernels for ubuntu to run smoothely on an eeepc.

Choosing an OS is personal preference, I choose to go with an nlited install of XP Pro on my Eee. For better advice and guidance on choosing an Eee OS I would recommend here:-
http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php
One idea would be to install one OS on the SSD and another on a flash drive.

Well, keep in mind that realistically, I'm not going to be running many Windows Exclusive Apps on my EEE... and it's a 900A, (160GB), so I'm not worried about space.
I'm trying to decide right now between Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Ubuntu 8.10.

i think the LTS version might be or at least will be a bit more stable than the newest version. and of course you'd have some peace until 2010 ;) but i don't know which one works best for eeepcs...
if you want to mess around a bit the netbook remix seems nice: http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr
anyway good luck and have fun :)

I really can't remember the last time I had a virus. I do agree with the slowing down of the system over time. However it would time some time and if it is maintained well it is not so much of a big deal.
I tried ubuntu and was not impressed, it was over a year ago, and uninstalled it.
I also nlited XP and it is running smooth. Check eeeuser.com and there is a ton of info there.
A lil playing around I was doing on the 1000 ha. I can put it at 1.9 easily but have not tried too much further than that. I want to get my 2Gb stick before I even put more time into the machine.
Xp Corp Sp2 Nlite
500 Seagate
1GB changing to 2GB
Just need to put quick Boot and I'm set.
One issue - need a good HD player. KMP puts this thing to it's knees. I have tried at 1.7 tops. Maybe once the mem comes I'll try 2.0 and higher see how it works.
I would also love to see speedstep FULLY disabled in a future bios.

My problem is that the 900HA is not as common and doens't have the same support... the BIOS doesn't allow for disabling of Speed Step, and my attempts to adjust FSB with some random clock generators using SetFSB have just caused the video to go out of sync... The built in ASUS tool can clock the FSB up to 139MHz automatically, but the 6-12x multiplier change still is annoying.

It should be very similar.
In bios enable maxcpuid - whatever it's called - and when I put my power settings in home/desktop it disables it. This works for me and some other users. Keep in mind that it must be on AC to work.
On Super Hybrid it stays at 1.7
On High it is 1.6
On power saver it stays - don't recall well - around 1.2ish
I then use crystal CPUID to control voltage.
The 900 HA should be very similar to the 1000HA btw
You may also need the latest bios btw for this LMK if it works for you!

Well using MAXCPUID to disable speedstep worked, but I don't know how to change FSB... setFSB doesn't have a suitable clock generator... using the ASUS tool gets me a max of 139MHz x 12, or 1676MHz.

Speedstep is what play around with the multi. If you ENABLE maxcpu it is disabled. Keep in mind that for now it has to run on ac power be on (for me) home/deskp battery power setting. Once this is in place the multi stays the same. You may need to update to newest bios. Heard it works for most newer models.

Well, multi is locked at x12 right now, but I still can't find a way to adjust FSB.

You should have SHE - super hybrid engine. That OC's it to 1.7.
Your system should be identical to mine - You should be able to use eectl and OC a bit. look at this link a bit - http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=54015
New screenie at 1.9Ghz - the Stock mem doesn't let me go higher but not so bad. Once my other stick comes it should OC higher.

I've already tried the whole host of options... EEECTL causes the video to go out of sync, and ASUS SUPER HYBRID ENGINE only goes up to 1.676GHz.

SHE only goes up to 1.7. EEECTL should help you to safely go to 1.9.
Which .ini file are you using? Are you using the one that came with ECTL on that page I linked you too?
