Hi

Im about to get from a friend a pair of headphones that were released on 2003. Their price back then was $500. It had really good reviews and people liked them, the few who could afford it.

My question is, right now (as of today), should I think twice before buying this headphones for $100?
I would like them, but I dont know how good are the $100-$120 headphones that are out on the stores now, considering these headphones costed $500 on release date, they had everything one could want. I saw on the box it says Dolby Digital, Pro Logic II, Sorround and some other features.

Should I go for them? This would be used specifically for music, since they are designed for movies, they must sound really good. What you all think?

EDIT: The model is Sony MDR-DS5100

Sony makes good headphones in the higher price brackets, but I've never heard of the particular model you mentioned. Go over to Head-Fi. You'll find everything you need to know about that headphone.

As far as buying old headphones goes, it's absolutely fine. Speaker driver technology, which is directly related to headphone driver technology, has not really changed a lot over the years. 2003 is practically brand new. There is a huge trading/buying/selling section at Head-Fi, and many older model headphones are prized possessions.

Well, thats what I did, but I come up with 10000 results lol!
Anyways, from what I could read, some people mention they lack some bass, and bass is one really important factor for me.

Then you won't be happy with them, no matter how good they may be otherwise. What are your music preferences?

Hip-Hop, reggaeton, some rock and some techno. Also some latin music (pop).
I also play a lot of FPS games like CS, Call of Duty etc, and some racing games.

For $100 you could probably do worse. They seem to go for ~200 on ebay, so I say try it out. If you don't like them, sell them and buy better cans.

It's worth noting that these things are wireless. The headphones (MDR-IF5000) alone go for about $100 new, but still require the RF unit to work.
