In the last 1-2 years I got bit by the audio bug. Since I'm a poor student and I'm always on the move (I have no desktop, just the laptop in my sig), I decided for some headphones. Here is what I have in mind, I will buy in stages since I don't have the money right now. I'm looking for advices and constructive criticism.
1. now: AKG K701 + CMOY amp (run on external HDD PSU and 5 germanium diodes to get it from 12V to 9) --> 300euros
2. in 6 months: external sound card with S/PDIF output and (possibly self clocking if I can afford it) external DAC --> 100 and 400+ euros
3. decent preamp (looking at Little Dot MK II) --> 2-300 euros
5. Good tube amp (possibly singe ended triode design) --> 700+ euros
6. STAX SR-007 MK2 --> 2000 euros
7. Various upgrades, depending on what is holding me back
Total: 4-5000 euros over 2-3 years.

You sure have quite a bit of money to spend on sound equipment for a poor student :p:. As for constructive criticism, I don't have any as from the looks of it you know more about proper headphone setups than me. BTW, what music style do you usually listen to?

remember that most of the equipment you have listed will resell for pretty good prices, so you can upgrade, sell, upgrade again for a while.

I would advise against buying in stages. By the time you have purchased everything you need the prices will drop. If you simply save until you have enough money for everything, they will be cheaper one year from now.

I've spent thousands on headphone equipment since visiting Head-Fi about a year ago. If you think being a computer enthusiast is expensive, try being an audio enthusiast. Yikes. Or both, I guess. Poor wallet. :(

Music is one of the greatest pleasures of my life. I usually listen to music during the night when it's perfect silence. I grab a cigarette, close my eyes and concentrate 100% on the music. I analyse every voice inflection, every instrument so any perceptible noise or frequency response dip/bump really pisses me of. I'm willing to spend almost all my money on audio equipment to enhance this experience.
Most of the time I listen to classical music or oldies. Lately I've been in love with the castrato voice:
Philippe Jaroussky (I know he's a counter-tenor, but man can he hit some high notes): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHJYNYi5N7o
