Hello! I'm the happy owner of a Diamond HD4870 1gb, and though I'm very happy with it's performance, would like to try a simple upgrade of the cooler's thermal compound to lower temps a bit and get a closer look at the hardware. Not ready to install an aftermarket cooler just yet, mainly from clearance concerns.

I've read the recent article on 4870x2 vmod/cooler upgrades, and also want to try the 'plastic washer under the X-frame' trick to increase cooler pressure on the chips. So two questions for those who've done this already:

What thermal tape should I order to cover the memory chips and/or voltage regulators? (I haven't disassembled the card yet to see if actual thermal tape or that marshmallow/cottonball material is used). Also, what compound is best for the GPU itself?

Also, What thickness washer to look for for the 'plastic washer under the X-frame' mod?

Thanks very much for any pointers !!

I use arctic silver 5 for everything, even for cake icing decoration, great stuff. The only mod I would personally do is change out the compound, unless you feel or others have shown great benefits from using a washer to increase pressure on the die, I wouldn't bother with that one.

The really best TIM, for the GPU-dies themselfs, at the moment seem to be coollaboratory liquid metal pads (http://www.coollaboratory.com/en/). They are quite expensive, but they work exceptionally well. ;)
