View Full Version : Is this AMD4850e powerful enough and watt effective?

I have made this rig, but I am not certain if its going to be sub 75w which I hope for, I hope I can make a system that can compete with a Atom in power use (at least abit close) But I cant find out if its really that effective!?!

It needs to be powerful enough to let my main rig stream 1080p X264 movies from it without it lagging on my main rig. And be able to extract big files (10gig ish) when it downloads them.

Would it be better to wait for a Phenom II and then downclock it?

I don't understand. If you're playing the content on your main rig isn't your main rig doing all the processing?

Well I dont want my power consuming pc to be on during night, so I want this to run deadquite and use no power to just download.

It has great perf/watt ratio. Just enable QnC and lower the muti until you find the lowest multi which the CPU is fast enough for you with. Going to get the same chip also. Friday or next Tuesday. :)

In that case that shouldn't be a problem :)

Anyone know how much watt it consumes?

Btw if I get a 790gx can that play 1080p movies? Then I could get a nas/htpc in one pack

I think 790gx + any X2 EE = great p2p rig and great htpc. To have the least amount of power draw, use 1 stick of ramm, and 1 750-500gb hard disk. Activate cool n quiet, and enjoy.

Another good energy effiecient rig would be E5200 + Ga-ep43 + hd4450

I would go with the amd one because of the integrated grafics.

Try buying a good efficient power supply of no more than 350-400 watts.

Can't go wrong with the Seasonic S12II-380 watter, about €50,-.

Dude, don't be too Eco friendly when building. My HTPC is as follows....

AMD 4050e Dual core 45W CPU/Stock Cooler
Biostar TA770
2GB of AData DDRII 800
Visiontek Radeon 3850 512MB Dual Slot Cooler
Win Tv 1600 Digital & Analog Tuner
Samsung F1 320GB
Antec Basiq 350W PSU
Light On Lightscribe Blu-Ray Player 6X/DVD 16X/CD 40X
1 SilentX fan in the rear of case

Overall the PC is dead silent. I tried a ASUS board before this that had onboard 3200 video, but the Blu Ray was choppy so I sold it and when I upgraded to my current ASUS board I moved the Biostar board to the HTPC and tossed a 3850 in and all is fine now. If you are planning to run 1080 to a HDTV or projector I suggest you not use on board video. BTW, I use my HTPC and a gaming console too.

I want it to be eco friendly as power is rather expensive here in Denmark. But from the reviews I can read then the 780g do 1080p just fine? I am thinking of getting this GA-MA78GM-S2H which do also have HDMI out and if I can get 5.1 sound and video on a card to 100$ then I am very satisfied.

i'm sorry this is an amd thread, but aren't intel processors much more efficient, power-wise?

for an HTPC, where you can offload video decoding to the chipset, AMD has the edge. You can underclock/undervolt a processor to as low as 1.0ghz, and let the 780g/790gx do all the video decoding. Power consumption can be below 40W under load if you go with a single core. With Intel, you do have more efficient processors, but the chipsets aren't as capable with video decoding, and in general comparable performance for this type of system will cost more, mostly due to board pricing.

ahhh yes i forgot all about that. Good to know, so nxt time when i have someone asking me for a htpc build i can dish out solid advice :yepp:

Btw as a HTPC is there any reason to pick 790gx? I can't seem to find any of those having HDMI and they cost almost double the price of the 780g

Anyone know how much watt it consumes?I have built two rigs recently, for my wife and for my brother, around Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H (780G). 4600 (90nm stepping) in wifeys and 4850e in my brothers. Slightly different parts internally (more memory in brothers rig). Vista 64-bit on both.

I measured power draw with a precision instrument and both lies around 42-45W idle, and draws circa 85-90W fully loaded. Both slightly overclocked... :D (C’nQ etc. of course enabled) Lower numbers for wifey and slightly higher for my brothers rig. Very good numbers, if you ask me, and effectively kills the “AMD runs hot and use a lot of power vs. Intel runs nice and cold –debate” (for me, at least… )

In contrast, my rig (M3A79-T w. Phenom 9850) draws 140-230 Watts…
