I've noticed that the newer sound cards are now in PCI-e. what are the advantages/disadvantages of having a PCI-e soundcard over a PCI one?
Thanks :)

Nothing. Only advantage is that on Crossfire/SLI setups you quite often don't have any PCI slots open.

the audio stack works diffrently in vista with pci and pci-e, favoring pci-e

I was thinking about getting an ASUS Zonar cuz its 90 bux and apparently pretty kick ass.
I have an ASUS p5b Delux, and is there a really a difference between the PCI and PCIE version?? Using Vista ULT X64
I have both a PCI and PCIE slot available away from the video card so location is not the issue for the sound card.... just performance comparison. It seems there have been more buyers for the pci-e vs the pci....
any thoughts?

My choice would be the PCI-e version if it pretty much the same price. There will be no perceivable performance of sound quality improvements, but it is more future proof. Your soundcard will probably be used a lot longer than your motherboard and in the future motherboards will have more and more PCI-e slots and fewer PCI slots. So go for the PCI-e version just to be more future proof, if the price is right.

No performance advantages. Motherboards are losing their PCI slots and being replaced by PCI-e slots. That's the only reason.

Yes, what Post #7 said.

PCI-E is the future
PCI is the past
Figure in 2-3 years there will probably only be one PCI slot per board, and none on the top end boards

PCI is so old and decrepit I wish I could just see a mobo with all PCI-E. and thats the reason PCI-E is better is that it's newer.
