View Full Version : I won the Biostar contest: SPi 8M @ 6.5Ghz E8600

I know it's Core i7 time already but the 775 era is still far from over. Biostar and Firingsquad had an overclocking contest wich ended about two weeks ago, some of you may know about it. The purpose was to get the best CPU clock / SPi 8M time ratio ... as im a 3D guy and SPi is not really my game i just went for massive CPU clocks to make up for what i lack in software tweaking. Not the most refined way to win but it did the job.

My buddy sang was of great help, i am sure i couldn't have got this without him.

Here's the setup:

Biostar T-Power I45 (NB @ 1.6V, -50C) / custom NB pot
Intel E8600 Q820A606 (1.98V, -155C) / CPU pot from Duniek
2x1GB Team Xtreem DDR1066 (3.21V)
EVGA 8400GS
Ultra-X 1600W
CSX 30GB SSD
Win XP SP2

The setup was closed inside a sealed box, vented with vaporised LN2 from the pots. Great way to not worry about condensation and keep all the parts very cool (especially the RAM :) ).

http://forum.crazypc.ro/attachment.php?attachmentid=35171&d=1226952373

The final result, that granted me first place: 1m37s469 @ 6507Mhz, RAM @ 650 4-4-4 PL8

After all the Pmem tweaks i couldn't run all the subtimings as tight as i could before even with high voltage and low temps, but overall the system was much faster. In the hands of a skilled Pi tweaker this setup should do WAY better.

Damn that's fast, nice setup. 640 CL 4 is amazing too and 3.2 vdimm...did the sticks survive it? Congratulations on the win.

I love the idea of putting the setup in a box to keep condensation down. that's just genius!!! I'm suprised I have'nt seen more people do that. What did you do? Pour the LN2 in there and close the lid really fast or what?

Thanks ! Yeah, Firingsquad's organisation was very bad, too bad Biostar is getting their image affected by associating with them.

Holy smoking fish batman that is nice. What were the temps on it.

The probe inside the case was showing around 0C.

Damn that's fast, nice setup. 640 CL 4 is amazing too and 3.2 vdimm...did the sticks survive it? Congratulations on the win.

It was 650Mhz .. and the memory still works OK after a total of more than 7 hours of benching like this, but it doesn't boot with 1.8V on all the boards anymore.

I love the idea of putting the setup in a box to keep condensation down. that's just genius!!! I'm suprised I have'nt seen more people do that. What did you do? Pour the LN2 in there and close the lid really fast or what?

The LN2 goes in the pots trough a tube and when it boils a part of it gets out trough the tubes and the rest just remains inside the box. Because it's cool and dry it remains at the bottom of the box and protects the parts of any condensation, and the excess just gets out trough a hole in the top of the box.

Great E8600
