Simple question really, friend of mine has an early senfu watercooling rad, which (from the info I can gather) is made of copper pipes with the fins attached to them.

You cant use that as a condensor. Its a radiator for watercooling and cant take the high pressures of phase change.

It's copper tubing, it looks brazed, and walls look normal thickness, so it can likely be used as a condenser. The copper tubing will easily hold the pressure.
To be sure you might want to pressure-test the thing with 25 bars of pressure or so.

i also think it will stand the pressures easylly

Thats what I figured, being copper pipe it would take the pressure.
I have got access to a bottle of nitrogen at work, so I should be able to pressure test it ok.

Gets my vote as a workable solution.
I have a cube rad. that was marketed by
DangerDen and comparing it to the condensor
in my Mach 1.... the quality is every bit as good.
Remember, these units are not the automobile
heater-core type pieces. These are condensors
that were brought down into the water cooling
world.

I have had a few (3) condensing coils custom made for me, by a coil mfgr in Houston, Texas. I spec'd a THR (total heat rejection) of approximately 850btuh @ 100cfm airflow. the condensers are 4"wide by 6"tall. they look dern near exactly like the prommy condensers.
For the first run of (3) coils, I paid $100.00 each. I'm building a scratch job, right now, with a Tecumseh 1,050 btuh @-10F R-134A compressor (estimated 450btuh @ -57F R-404A) and an evaporator (fashioned by myself). I'll see how the condenser works (but I'm confident that it will be fine).
If all goes well, maybe we could pool together for a large order and get the price down to a reasonable expense.

Herefishy,
Do you pictures of the condenser? I might be interested in getting a few.

Dude thats a sweet condensor. Whats the pipework size on that? looks pretty big, 1/2" ?

The pipe is 3/8". I indicated to the mfgr, that perhaps it would be 5/16" or so, but he had the condenser coil sizing (confuser) program in front of him and said, "Nah, 3/8.". The condenser is only 4" wide, and 6" tall. I should've put a quarter in the picture, next to the coil.... oh well.
I'll report operation, perhaps Friday, if I really get after it, here. :D

herefishy,
nice work! What's the compressor?

What's the compressor?
I like the Tecumseh TPA line of compressors in 850, 950, and 1,050 btuh capacity ratings, @ -10, R-134A. The one that you see is the big, BIG critter, @ 1,050 btuh @ -10F SST R-134A. I like these, at -60SST R-404A @ capacity 450btuh (150watt) applications + or minus.
The TPA1380YXA is equal to the Danfoss NF9X
The TPA1390YXA is equal to the Danfoss NF10X
and... The TPA1410 is equal to the Danfoss NF11X... :D
The one you see is the '1410.
"team puss" is running on these Tecumsehs. Runmc's self-built VC rig is running on the '1410, per my recommendation :p: (he built it himself!... though I might say that I was involved in the construction.... but he will inform you, that all I did was drink BEER! :D ) . Donebalp's Prommy (which blew a compressor because I did a 404A mod w/o cap tube mod) is running on a '1390 (with new cap tube, mind you!). And......, Donebalp's custom VC chiller (that I built) employs a '1380.

where do you get those compressors? i have been looking for one of almost the same charactaristics. if you have any extras pm me since i live in texas and shipping would be cheap. the compressor i have now is driving me up the wall, its an ac compressor that has no cooling capacity down at lower temps... im ready for a new one. thanks

Let me know how much for the condenser and how man I can get.
thanks

ellsworth.... PM me....
baker.... the price will depend on the order quantity.... we will have to get some committments for a large order before we can determine the damage..... the first run - set-up and all was $100.00 a POP. I haven't called Houston (we have a problem ... LOL :p: ), to see what the price break is at, but I will check into it, and we can see if we can get enough interest in the forumn, to meet the factory determined quantity.

OH... and I would make one change in the condenser configuration... and that is - Instead of feet on the bottom, I would request a lip on the front of the condenser coil in order to make "panel mount", as opposed to "foot mount". I'm not satisfied witht the foot mount, at this point, and will likely refit the coil with panel mount brackets...

.... and IMHO, sir... You should be looking for compressors with those EXACT SAME characteristics. :D
