View Full Version : Burning in RAM, can it get too hot?

Ive been trying to burn in my new sticks of Muskin Black lvl 2, running them at 3.2v and 225mhz 2-2-2-5 on Sandra memory burn-in. After about 30 minutes they are very hot to the touch, will this damage the ram? I've burned in some corsair on my NF7-s using Prime95 @ 2.9v and it worked wonders for my overclock a few days later, but is 3.2v too high for this?
I cant get prime95 to loop on the torture test for even 1 minute with this ram, even @ stock settings. Not sure if its the ram or the prime95 beta, will have to test it with memtest86 once I get a new floppy drive. Thats why Im usin Sandra.
Whats the best way to burn in ram and are there any precautions to take?
this is concerning:
even @ stock settings. .
ram should be able to run at least @ default specs, otherwise there is something seriously wrong.

c'wood (IC7) doesn't like those timings...
try cas2, 6,3,2

k, Ill give it a shot. Is 3.2v and sandra sufficient for a burn in and how long should I let it run

Um, the timings are fine.
If you are running 3.2v at stock speed (200mhz) that is what would be causing your errors, I would back the voltage down and try again.

Ummm...
do your homework, dood.
I've got an IC7 in front of me...400+ with cas2, 5,2,2 is unstable!
It's been noted her a hundred times on the forums... cas2, 5,3,2 and cas2, 6,3,2 work better.
Come back and talk to me when the place behind your ears dries.

Homework? I think i'll leave that up to you. Go look on the ORB and look at how all the top Canterwoods are setup.

show me a top ORB Max3 running cas2, 5,2,2

Who said anything about MAX3? The top ORB scores are P4C800s. You won't see them running loose timings.

This is like how an old-school breakdancing challenge starts!
"IC7 ain't down wit' da tight sh|t yo!!"
"Boy please...P4C800 gonna wipe the floor with you're IC7s azz"
"We'll settle this on the dance-floor!!!"

This is not an Abit vs ASUS discussion....this is about RAM timings on Canterwood boards...

No. Actually it's a thread about a guy burning in DDR on his Abit IC7-Max3. There've been threads here at XS about IC7 variants not liking tras to cas of 2?!? And I believe the experts here suggest running DDR at high voltages during burn-in to make more headroom in the stick's performance.

Well he said Canterwood doesn't like the timings....anyway i'll have to look that up because AFAIK it didn't have a problem with them and thats why you see all the top rigs @ 2-2-2-5.

Well,
It IS an issue that many people have, even I believe with some P4C800's. Of course peeps like Macci, Opp and their ilk have uber skillz.

I'm not a p4 guy, but if your ram has CH5 chips on it, it probably wont run over 180 fsb at 2-5-2-2, and go much farther on 2-5-3-2. BH5 on the other hand does 2-5-2-2 at high fsbs.. that might be the confusion :x

I had some CH5 and they would not run RAS to CAS lower than 3 at any speed (2-3-2-5 MAX).

Back to the original question
What is the best way to burn in ram:
What program?
What voltage?
How long?

My bh5 will run 2-5-2-2, but to get over 268 fsb I had to take volts to 2.95 on ic7 board. At 2.8v had to relax ras to cas to 3 to run over 268fsb.

So 3.2v is too high for burning in? Dont you want to give the ram as much juice as possible and run it for as long as possible under max load?

I'd try burning it in at 3.0 overnight and then see how it ran. If you still looking for more then do a second burn in at 3.1 or 3.2, no need to rush it.

what are the best programs to use

I just played games with it, thats pretty RAM intensive. Prime 95 is too, and probably 3DMark.

I sneak up on my RAM burnin.
I find the highest FSB that's memtest86 and sandra mem bench stable. Then I run memtest86, sandra, prime95 and game for 24-72 hours or so.
Then I try to bump the FSB. If I can bump stably, I do the memtest, etc burnin again. If not, I bump the Vdimm and try bumping the FSB. Then do the bench burnin cycle.
Rinse, lather, repeat ;)

ROFL hollywood you made my dad with that... LOL
I dont normally burn in my ram (it gets a permanent burn in)
I think the best program will be somehting that works your memory hard, you also want to work out the full range of your memory... so a program that uses allot of memory up.
Id probably go with UT2003, or unreal2 they allways seem to work my ram pretty hard, plus there a darn site more fun than watching prime95 for a few hours....

I usually use teh newest Prime95 beta, just set it on the torture test that uses the most RAM and leave it to do it's stuff, it's the only thing I know that has taken me down to 1.6Mb RAM remaining. :slobber:
