I'm building a new i7 computer, as my old Amd x2 is starting to show it's age. Anyways, I've picked up a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, and I'm just wondering if I should use the included thermal paste, or use some AS5 that I have sitting around. Also, what is the most common way of applying thermal paste these days? Last time I did it, I used the smear it thin over the chip method. I've heard of another method of 1 line across the cores of the CPU. Thanks!

Oddly, the stuff provided with the 120 is decent, I think it is better than the AS5.

Put a decent bead in center and apply even pressure with the sink.

ChillFactor 2 is pretty good indeed :)

CF1 wasn't so great, but CF2 is competitive with AS5/MX-2/Freeze/TX-2 (yes, I know they're not all the same, but it's in that league, much unlike CF1).

I've become a big beleiver in Diamond 7..
I have it on all my machines.
I've seen a difference of app 4C over AS5 across the board.
I do 2 thin lines in a cross pattern.
On Nehalem 965 at 3733 I see 61C at 100% load in a 72F room using a TRUE with a 87CFM fan..
Best of Luck and welcome to XS:up:
