Hi fellas,

I'm eager to start a new phase-change project. Had fun with a small fridge as a waterchiller be4, and I'd like to do it again.

I've been searching for 2nd hand bottle-coolers (like Evian's), without much luck. They're hard to find, and even if, waayyy overpriced. So now I think I'll try my luck on stand-alone (small) freezers. But I have a few questions concearning them. I want to use the freezer as a whole. I'm aiming at fitting another evap, which is to be submerged into a liquid container which sits in the freezer. The freezers' body will isolate things properly, me thinks.

1.- What ID copper tubing would be suitable to be used for the evap? (A have anything between 6mm ID...20mm), and what kind'a length should I coil up?
2.- Is the capillary in freezers long enough to be pulled 'till ouside the freezer's door, so I can solder the custom evap on?

Hope to get some answers,
Thnx in advance.
Miles.

I would say that 6 meters (~18ft) of 3/8" would do nicely.

Pulling out the capillary is a hell of a job, but when done correctly you could get it outside the freezer.

Just today I saw this fridge/freezer combo alongside the road, it had been dumped there. I did not hasitate, got it back home, and tried it. Thing still works. :D Gonna yank out the compressor and capillary, I can get another condensor, and I'll make my own evap. Have this nice Igloo standing around doin' nuttin' too ;)

It looks like this:

The backside of the fridge. The thing stand about 1.5m tall, and the top compartment (around 40cm) is the freezer.

This is the compressor (as you see). there's not much info to be found on it. There's no tag in or around the fridge itself either about the refrigerant used / capacity or anything. All I know is that's an old *** Zanussi fridge, probly uses R12 don't it? The tag on the compressor says:
Zanussi-Mel-S.p.A.
220V~ 50Hz 0.92A 128W
E 59 601
0403579
Dunno what that's all about.

Does any one of you guys know what kind'a thing this actually is?

Thanx for the info 'bout the evap. I'm probly not gonna be able to find a 6 meter pipe in one piece, but I'll make two coils then.
Oh and somethin' else DaBit, you can keep stuff metric, as I'm a dutch fella to ;)
My main concearn now is the capillary. If I just use the one from the fridge shown, I'll be alright. True?

Edit:
Oh, and somethin' else. The compressor is an old R12 thingy, consuming 128W. Do you guys think it'll be suitable for usage in a waterchilling system? When done right, what should I expect (aproximately)?
