View Full Version : Are the Logitech Z-5500 good enough for a home theater?

I'm building an HTPC and I need speakers for the home theater, however, I'm unsure whether I should go with speakers generally sold for home theaters or speakers generally sold for PCs. The Z-5500 is a 505W 5.1 speaker system... it gets good reviews, but then I don't know too much about sound products. I do most of my audio through a $15 pair of Sony MDR-G42s when I'm at my computer. My desktop doesn't even have speakers hooked up, right now. All the same, though, I don't have a very acute ear for sound, so I don't need anything phenomenal. So... if anyone who knows audio could tell me if they think these speakers would work for a home theater, let me know... otherwise, I'm up to suggestions on what would be better. Try and keep it under $300-400, though. Also, consider that I'm in an apartment building, so I can't really have the sound booming. I'll need something that sounds pretty good when played on low to medium volumes... but just in case I want to make it loud for a particular movie, I'd like some decent sounds under loud volumes, too.
Thanks.

They are the best buy for the money imo.

You would do yourself a huge favor if you went with even an HTIB system. Go with an Onkyo setup, the receiver alone is worth it, just for the fact that you can upgrade speakers, and it will have tons of inputs for various devices.
Onkyo HT-S5100S 7.1 Entertainment System w/ iPod Dock & HDMI Pass Through (refurbished) $224 or $214

They are capable in a small room, but you can do much better for the money.

That onkyo set is fantastic for the prize! I wish I had those prices in Europe..

the Z5500s are good for computer speakers, but for a home entertainment system they arent even close to a semi decent amp and speakers.

If you plan on going with satellites, at the very least mount them at ear level. It will sound like voices coming out a of tin can regardless--and I own the Z-5500s so I know.

HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) is a much better deal for home theater.

HTIB - if one were to buy such a set-up, whats a soundcard worthy of a HTIB? (assuming PC is still source)

A HTIB will contain a receiver, so you'll need a card that can output a digital signal, preferably something with Dolby/DTS decoding capabilities. Lots of options out there.
