View Full Version : Where's the payoff jack?!?!

Man...what a "fun" time I've had the last 2 weeks. After upgrading to my specs below, a customer of mine wanted a clone of my machine, so I could now upgrade to a 2.8 and 1 GB of mem.

Now, I don't have to , But I figure I could get at least 3.65Ghz on air with the 2.8, as my 2.6 stops just shy of that (3.58).

My biggest problem is with the memory decision. As currently I'm running some older Corsair PC3200 LLPT @ 270 FSB 5:4 2,2,2,5.

So...after combing through the boards I've come to a profound conclusion.

NO MEMORY DECISION IS PERFECT!!!

Arghh...geez. The PC4200 is crap, and PC3200 at tight timings and 5:4 at the same FSB as the PC4200 will be the same if not better.
WHAT TO DO?!?!?

Well, as I'm moving up to a 2.8, my FSB is gonna be running lower, prolly OCed around 255/260. Now I'm currently at 270 / 5:4. If I go down to 255/260, I'll be dropping my bandwidth quite a bit. So naturally I wanted to run 1:1 at the slower FSB to make up the FSB hit I took by going to the 2.8.

But....the only ram I'm finding with a guarenteed 1:1 @ 260 is really the Geil Ultra Plat 4200. However if my 2.8 sucks, I'll be stuck with a 2.8 thats worse than my 2.6 AND a lower FSB. So what should I do?!?!?!

Should I keep my 2.6 and just go for 2x(2x256 Mushkin LvL2 Black PC3500) so I can keep my bad-ass 5:4 performance at 270FSB??? With the 2 pairs of mushkin, I could run 512 for benchies and the whole gig for gaming.

As the customer would be getting my old 2.6 and my Corsair, I'm kinda worried that the 2.8C I end up getting will suck. Shoot, I dunno...

what combo is better than my 2.6C @ 3.5 / Corsair PC3200 @ 270 FSB 2,2,2,5???

Or should I simply stay where I'm at and pocket the profit as opposed to upgrading yet again???

Suffice to say, I have this mental problem because I hang out here at Xtreme!!! ;)

If I was a normal person, I'd realize my PC is already in the top 3% in the world and just be happy...but when you hang with the eagles, you want to soar like them as well.

you can delete the other one I think by editing it and checking "delete" :)

What cooler you use on that 2.6c of yours?

I'm using an Alpha PAL 8942T for Socket 478 with a Panaflo 80mm 49.CFM fan.

I hit 47C max @ 3.58Ghz and 1.60Vcore.

I'm thinking I may of gotten a super 2.6, thats why I'm kinda aprehensive about trying the 2.8, as it "should" OC better...but may not on my aircooling setup.

I know mrzee, uses a 2.8C and so did Major slaughter (Before it fried.)

As the 2.6 would go into the customers machine, I'd hate to give it up for a retarded 2.8, I COULD always just put the 2.8 in the customers machine if it OCs like crap.....but I could of just ordered him a 2.6 in the first place and pocketed the profit.

Decisions, decisions. :( That is the CPU game though...you never know what you're gonna get.

However one of my main questions is this:

If an FSB is at a constant speed, say 260, which ram would win???

FSB=260

1. PC4200 @ 1:1 with 4,4,4,8 (260 Mhz actual)

2. PC32/3500 @ 5:4 with 2,2,2,5 (208 Mhz actual)

I would think the fact that the PC 4200 is at 1:1 would make it the clear winner, as any latency impact would be negated by sheer clock speed ( as in it's 52Mhz faster by running @ 1:1 )

Dude forget Geil....if you're gonna buy any memory above 4000 it has to be OCZ...or maybe Adata but its hard to find.

Man...I think I just had some sort of epiphany!!!!

I've got some OCZ PC3700EL Dual Channel lying around that WILL do 250 2,3,3,7 @ 1:1

I'll simply get a P4 3.0C and run it at 240-255FSB.

That way, I KNOW I'll get the good 1:1 performance, AND I'll get the Mhz. So I've just got to hope the 3.0C will do 3750Mhz on air under 1.6Vcore.

Screw running 1 gig when I have 512 (2x256)of such good 1:1 ram just sitting in the package on my desk!!!

Sweet...I should be running this by Tuesday:

P4 3.0C @ 3750Mhz
OCZ PC3700 @ 250 1:1 CL2 3,3,7
With a Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro

I think the above system should EASILY be a 20-22k 3dmk2k1 machine.

That temp was really nice. I can reach up to 55 with my 3.4 @ 1.65 (anything lower will cause instabillity)
And i have the SP-94 which is the "best".
Btw I use a nice big zalman fan @ 93 m3 dunno how much cfm that is.

I agree try out that OCZ 3700 it is some awesome memory. I don't know how the EL does but i know the Gold rocks and does over 250 usually, haven't seen how it responds to voltage yet though. Don't know about 3750 on air but you can try.

I WILL try...;)

Hmm...maybe a TEC/AIR setup???
