This is something I've been curious about for a little while now. Normally more heatpipes == better, since they move heat away from the CPU faster, but does this still apply to Direct Touch heatpipe heatsinks, such as the Xigmatek HDT and OCZ Vendetta series?
I've heard some people say that the S1284 and S964 aren't actually as good as the 3 heatpipe versions, since only some of the heatpipes make contact, but I've never received a definitive enough answer for me to decide one way or another.
So is the 4-pipe versions better than the 3-pipe versions of these heatsinks? Is it one way for Intel quads (since they have 2 dies) and another way for dualies? Would orientation make a difference (especially with quads)?

I would have to say yes the new s1284EE is better.
it got a higher over ambient temp then the s1283 slightly but the difference in fan speed is the reason why. There's a few scattered reviews that show with a heavy load and same fan that the s1284 gets better then the s1283.
For the smaller heatsinks s983 beats s964 Id think because the spacing of the heatpipes makes full contact not easy or maybe not possible to achieve. The s1284ee fixed that problem by making less aluminum between the heatpipes.

If we ignore the EE for now (They haven't filtered down to the Australian market yet), what about the regular vanilla S1283 vs S1284?

I own both S1284 and S1283, and from experience, the S1284 is better, by a noticable step ( and comes with a nice fan :p: )

I have the S1283 and love it, I would love to try the S1284, but the big thing to me is..... i feel Direct Touch is the bomb for air cooling, I am sold, hook , line and sinker...
when the s1284 goes on sale just like 1283 did, ill pick it up. i still havent even had the chance to try out the 15$ s1283 :P

i like the HDT spacing on the sunbeam core contact freezer.

I have the S1284EE on my Xeon 3360 @4GHz ... idle temps have been 26~29C and under load (Prime95 and OCCT) max has been 58~62C. I had Noctua NF-12P heatsink/fan combo before and temps for idle were 28~31C, while load was about the same, give or take a few degrees. I say that it works fine!
