The base is too big.
It needs to be made of solid stainless steel.

Then take the base off. It is just an wrist rest.
It is the best keyboard money can buy. Especially if you do a lot of typing. I don't know if you have used an IBM Model M in the past, but it damn near exactly the same, just not as ugly and better quality switches.
Each switch has a 50 million keystroke lifetime which AFAIK is significantly higher than any other mechanical keyboard out there. So expect the keyboard to out live you :p:
Once you try it out for a week, you'll be hooked. Everytime you have to go back and use a membrane keyboard you'll feel disgusted with it :ROTF:

I'm using a G15. It clicks good enough for me..
I've typed enough on it that you can see through almost all of the keys now too.

Unfortunately, membrane keyboards are required for laptops. Anyways--I have two Model M's--an original IBM and a Lexmark. Excellent keyboards--I've used them for gaming before too, of course. I'm thinking of either that Steelseries 7G or a Das Keyboard. I don't know if I could make the jump from Professional to Ultimate though... blank keyboards are cool, but I don't use certain keys enough.

A basic kb with a pretty high price. 40$ more than a G15...?
It should give u a finger massage for the price... :p:

Are all laptop keyboards membrane based? It does not necessarily mean that notebook keyboards are crap, I actually like the keyboard on my ThinkPad a lot. I would actually like to have a similar kind of keyboard for desktop use, I haven't found a proper one yet though and I will for now stay with my current keyboard.

Don't get me wrong--they're not all bad. Thinner designs are better in my opinion. I had an old Dell Inspiron laptop that was 100% crap for typing. It felt like I was pounding on rubber domes--not something I want to feel while typing. My EeePC's keyboard is alright, as is my older Logitech keyboard. I do hope I can bring my Model M to my dorm next week--mechanical keyboards are nice. If not, I'll be asking for a Das Keyboard Pro or Ultimate.

to think of it .... it's quite good for HTPC built .... considering if you're typing while on your sofa

You can always make it wireless if you really want to. It just requires some modding if you want to really integrate the wireless transmission. I'm not sure how it will affect responsiveness and stuff like that though and it will cost you some extra money.

I find that I type faster on a laptop keyboard because of the shorter keystrokes, I like it :)

I have one and it's a very good keyboard. I bought it because my old keyboard was getting beat and the 7G has an antighosting feature so you can really mash keys while gaming without getting any lockups. Pricey though, I got mine at buy.com for $80 using a $30 coupon for starting a buy.com credit card. Also got free shipping. Well built key board. The arm rest comes off easily. The volume control keys and usb ports are handy as well.

I really dig the integrated USB ports and headphone jack, that's completely awesome. The $130 price tag, however, is totally not awesome.
I might have to hack a headphone port into my 11 year old ps2 keyboard :D

I don't understand how this is a gaming keyboard? Does it allow you to customize all the keys on the board for macroing in games or profiles for games or something that is actually for the purpose of gaming. I still love my G11 personally.

i was going to get one a few months ago from performance pcs (only place i found them at the time), had the order placed and didn't get an email update saying it shipped after a few days so contacted them and found out they didn't have it in stock and didn't know when they'd have them so i cancled the order and got a Razer Tarantula. i'm never buying a Razer product again, the keys suck, the keyboard freaks out every now and then and it doesn't work with my maximus II formula with bios and boot up.
the steelseries is considered gaming because of the anti-ghosting. macro buttons are like cheating

The feel to the keys is a tad more resistance than my older Logitech PS-2 keyboard. Nothing major, but the keys are mechanical, they are built more heavy duty. As for sound, it clicks a bit louder than my old PS-2, but when gaming, you are not noticing it. When gaming, my typing is more smoother, pressing and holding buttons, versus typing a document. Other than emails & forum posts, I don't spend a lot of time typing on this keyboard. This kind of thing does not bother me. I bought it because of the anti-ghosting feature and it's built very heavy duty. However, it doesn't do the macro thing. The keyboard is real basic. It works excellent for a first person shooter games. It excellent with RTS games, except that there is no software, like the G-15, to tie multiple key strokes to one key bind.
