Hey guys, I just built a rig with ud3p w/ an evga 9800GTX+ i got it at mwave for $189 - $20 mail in rebate.
I kinda bought the card in a rush. I am not sure if I will crossfire but it would be good to have the ability.
I can return and pick up another card tomorrow, since I have to RMA my RAM.
Anyhow my question is that, should I get the 4850 instead or just keep the 9800GTX+ I think the nvidia is a little quicker, but i wont be able to add another card. If you do suggest the 4850, which one do you recommend. My budget is 150-200.
Thank you fellow.

I'm a little confused, you're talking about Crossfiring the 9800GTX+? I assume you mean SLI. As far as I know, the 4850 is a little faster in most cases, even if they're pretty much the same. What confuses me is that you say you "wont be able to add another card" and you're talking about the 9800GTX+, how exactly are you going to add a 4850 if you already have a 9800GTX+?
As for what 4850 you get, they're all pretty much the same.
from the reviews ive read the 4850 is better for antialiasing

9800GTX+ will overclock like mad (my old 65nm 9800GTX would do 850core 2200shader and 2400mem) and the drivers from NV are far far better than that of ATI. Also the HD 4850 series dont overclock nearly as well as nvidias 9800GTX+.
Overclocked 9800GTX>Overclocked HD 4800.

Along with what inCore said, you can only put dual NVIDIA cards in SLI. And that board is for CrossFire. So if you would want to run dual cards then you have to swap your GTX+ for a 4850. The UD3P you have can run CrossFire only, so that means just ATI cards.
Also the general train of thought here is that both cards are on par until AA is switched on, and then the 4850 whips the GTX+'s PCB ass. So it's probably better you switch anyway :p:

Depends on the game, I owned a HD 4870 at one point (which is even stronger than the HD 4850) and the 9800GTX that I had was better in Unreal 3 Engine games with AA applied so if you like games such as Mass effect, Bioshock, UE3, Gears of War then the 9800GTX is the better choice over the HD 4850.
I found the HD 4870 was just a mixed bag from game to game and overclocking the card hardley made any difference in performance. Some games played great while others were lacking, I blame that on ATI's less than stellar driver team.

If i understand, you want to know if it's a good choice to change your 9800GTX + for a HD4850 ? Cause i guest you have a crossfire compatible motherboard right and can't make SLI with an other 9800GTX+. And you plan to do a 4850CF in the future ?
What's the resolution are you play ? Dual card configuration is not neccesary if you play at 1280/1024...
Keep your 9800GTX + , 4850 it's not worth it, wait for the next gen Nvidia/AMD :)

Yeah thats a fair point, there are games out there that are optimised to work with NVIDIA cards. I've just read countless times on this forum that the love is with the 4850 over the GTX+.

But change a 9800GTX+ for a 4850 isn't worth it in my oppinion.

If its a free exchange then 4850. Cheaper in most places too.

Thank you everyone. Once again you guys were so wonderful in help me deciding. The exchange was free, so I got the HIS 4850 w/ ICEQ 4 Turbo Cooling, OCed @ 650mhz.
Even if I don't CF, at least now I have the peace of mind that if I do want to I can.

My bad for noob mistake. I understand it can be annoying to see same crap posted over and over. Even with my silliness everyone is still very helpful.

The 4850 is the better card. The 9800GTX+ is a decent card though but check with your mobo. If your mobo is a crossfire mobo, go with 2 x 4850. If it is an SLI, go with 2 x 9800GTX+. Also, if you're running XP, you can keep both and use your 4850 as your renderer and use your 9800GTX+ as your physics processor.

Thank you brother. I already returned the 9800 and bought the 4850.
I wasn't aware of the fact that you could use ati and nvidia at the same time,
