View Full Version : Connecting fans to the motherboard or straight to PSU

Which is better? I have always thought that connecting the fans straight to the PSU is better as it offloads demand from the motherboard.

I just read the ASUS Rampage II Extreme review over at HardOCP and realized that he said he likes the multiple fan headers since he doesn't connect his fans to anything else. What's good?

Best is what you heard, get a cheap fan controller and connect all your fans there. If you into OCing less stress on mobo lines is always better.

that's right , i even disable lan and audio in the bios and any thing else i don't need

it doesn't matter, the power comes from the same place, and the fan control lines on the mobo are independent of cpu power or any other critical device anyways. I only put single fans per channel, I don't do daisy chaining. Oh yea, no deltas or tornados.

On your mobo manual, it will say how much the fan ports can handle on the motherboard. It usually handles up to 2-3W per fan connector.
Just respect the limits stated on your mobo manual, and you will be fine. It won't affect your overclock at all, the fan power lines on the mobo are independent from cpu power lines or other power lines.

if ur wanting to overclock, id say that its not the matter of putting stress on the board, but allowing ur fans to get full power out of it to blow the OC heat heat out. so in that case either a fan controller or straight to psu. if u have 2 ultra kaze 3000 rpm like me, i think ud want a fan controller. i didnt know what i was getting myself into when i bought these fans. theyre extremely loud :D

ultra kaze 3000 rpm = 12v * 0.6A = 7.2W
My mobo can't handle that wattage on the fan connector, so if I had them I would connect direct to the PSU. But if there is a mobo that can handle it (should be on the mobo manual), it would make no difference on plugging it to the mobo or the PSU. You would be using 100% of the fan in eather case. You can control fan speed on the bios if you plug it on your mobo.

So basicaly, if your mobo can handle your fan, you can connect it to the mobo, or direct to the PSU, it will make no difference.

If your mobo can't handle the fan, the only way ot to connect it to the PSU or fan controller that can handle it.

this should be able to handle high speed fans with ease.

i dont know the amps per channel on the rheobus, but it has 6 channels for people with tons of fans.

I have 3 of them  Once apon a time they were all conected to my P5E :D Worked fine. I could handle the noise, but my mum couldn't lol so I got a fan controller to make them quieter.

I dont see how you can live with that 220cfm you have in that sig I see holy cow man. Yeah i need a fan controller, but I cant really find one that suits my needs I have a lian li case P80 so it has a front cover door and most have knobs I want a controller that can handle the amps on the ultra kaze for sure I need to buy 2 more 2 more in fact for my feser 480 radiator I just bought.

I have a Scythe Kaze Master for my Ultra 3000's.

Also my delta 220CFM is for benchmarking.
