Hey.
I have just purchased new headphones, which are open-air for my gaming rig. Now I need to get some microphone for it. Which microphone would be better, omnidirectional or unidirectional. Any recomendations?

A decent general purpose condenser mic
the samson co1u is a viable choice, it's a usb mic

Make sure it's a noise-cancelling microphone, unless you plan on placing it on your desk.

I've given up on headset mounted mics, and clipons are just frustrating. 95%+ of good headphones don't come with mics anyway, so I'd suggest a USB desk mic - I've been using a Logitech one for about a year now, no complaints. It's only uni-directional, but I really don't think that matters too much, although I'd imagine that with an omni-directional mic you may pick up more background noise.

Headset mounted mics are the best ones out there. I use my speakers with my headset hung around my neck, so that I can use the microphone on it. I think I'm going to mod them by removing the earpiece parts, and keeping just the neckband with mic.
Since I use speakers, headset mics are the only thing that have worked for me. I wear a Sennheiser PC160 headset around my neck, and it irritates the hell out of me that I have to wear a noose.
The only thing I can think of is getting a mic stand that can extend the mic to be close to my mouth. Desktop mics like the Logitech are still too far away on my setup and pick up my speakers

I also find it VERY hard to get a decent microphone for a heatset.
I dont want a USB heatset, I have a sound card for that you know :D
I want 5.1 Heatset :)

I use a table mic from Logitech, works great for me.

Obviously if you're using speakers a table mic isn't for you. But, why are you using a mic with speakers anyway? Feedback, playing back the sounds of the game to everyone else when you speak and ruining voice clarity...

I have the same headset and do the exact same thing. :p:
You can get around-the-neck microphones without the earpiece parts, so that might be up your ally. I'm just going to remove the earpiece parts on mine, so that somehow I only have the neckband and mic.

Only if you have a desktop mounted mic. Noise-cancelling microphones won't exhibit this problem.

I came across Audio-Technica ATR 97 omnidirectional microphone. Anyone have seen them working? What`s your comment?

I was looking at this same exact model ... its about $75 on Amazon. Is a cardiod mic used mainly for VOIP stuff pretty much overkill? I take it this is more for music production or podcasting? It does look very nice though. Do you have this mic and can comment how well it blocks noise coming from behind the mic (ie speakers?)
