Alright, Since the pre-beta is here, and everybody can get their hands on it. We need a master thread for all this stuff.

Current (Pre) Beta Build: 6.1.6801 (Given away at PDC)

Sneak Peak builds: 6.1.6956 (Shown off at WinHEC China)

Internal build: 6.1.6956

Leaked: 6.1.6956

Now, Since I'm working on build 6801, I've noticed a few issues.

1) nForce drivers don't like to be installed, If installed. Once the computer reboots it will keep rebooting till a re-install of Windows 7.

2) When Installing Video drivers. Windows 7 will pick out of all monitors/screens currently attached and set the larger resolution screen as Main screen. Making the user confused if that monitor is off.

3) After awhile, W7 seems not to like renaming files. Such as txt -> rtf, etc etc, I tried txt -> bat too.

4) Daemon's tools (STPD install keeps looping) will not install.

5) Red Alert 3 will not play (Says it's missing a language pack)

For Pics, Refer to Here (http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/Warboy/Windows7/Build%206801/), Here (http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/Warboy/Windows7/Build%206801/Superbar%20Enabled/) and Here (http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/Warboy/Windows7/Build%206801/Superbar%20Enabled/New%20Stuff/). For a current build list, Refer here (http://www.aeroxp.org/board/index.php?showtopic=10706).

To enabled the Superbar, Download either the X86 (32bit) (http://www.withinwindows.com/files/upf/upf_x86_rev0.zip) or X64 (64bit) (http://www.withinwindows.com/files/upf/upf_x64_rev0.zip) patches.

Only one issue thus far :
- Installing Creative's driver for my X-Fi causes random BSODs when playing sound. Not surprising given it's Creative drivers. Had to go back to onboard sound.

Other than that, it runs well.

I'm really liking Windows 7 so far. As an engineering student I am finding the calculator in windows7 much more useful than the old xp/vista one. I can't comment much on how fast it is as I have not done any testing, but start and shutdown times seem a little faster.

The only problem I ran into so far is my anti-virus (Avira Antivir) will install and the scanner will work, but the active real-time scanning does not work.

I have not spent a whole lot of time with it, but it seems stable enough. I will be using it as the main OS for my laptop until the beta comes out:) or until the aug 2009 evaluation period ends. I will have to see how things progress with the beta's and RC's before I decide that I will buy it when it releases; but so far I'm liking it.

Is it only me that reacted to the forcing of a separate 200mb "system files" partition at install? A partition not readable in windows once installed btw. Dind't have much time to investigate further, but I really don't like the idea of a hidden partition with "system files needed for windows to work properly" as stated at install.

Where can I get a copy of this beta? I am registered to be a beta tester for MS but have not gotten any responses from them. If someone could provide a link to a download it would be great, I am sure there are other folks here that are interested in this info as well!

Thanx, Lee

It's for easier repair, if one of your system files get corrupted (so to say), It will pull the backup from the hidden partition. The Hidden partition basically has backup copies of all Critical System Files.

It's not Beta yet guys, It's pre-beta. Beta 1 is targeted for Very late November, December, Early January. Microsoft's current roadmap shows that after Beta 1, There will be the First RC. Then if this is true. I expect a RTM Version ready by Q3 next year.

Also, I updated the main post.

search up windows 7 build 6801 or pdc build on TPB or google torrent. When it asks for a key, use nothing or use the key microsoft gave you if you beta tested windows vista.

I'm running the newest beta right now, have been for about 3 weeks. I'm alowed to talk about it and answer questions but I CANNOT give you the file9s0 to install it, nor can I post up screenshots. I'm waiting on microsoft to contact me back so that I can give out that info/pics, but they are busy people you know. (oh yeah, did I mention I'm a beta tester?)

Well, due to the fact that beta testing for MS is a half-publically thing, and there are a few millions of you...maybe you shouldn't expect an answer too soon.

1. crossfire dont work with ati´s current driver, bsod at windows log in.
without crossfire link, it works.
2. had some issues with media player and creating a playlist, got bsod and after that it seems to be working.
3. installed driver for xfi, used vista compatibility mode, seems to work great.
4. love the enlarge windows when moved to the top, useful when using dual screens.
5. the 15sec playtime when hovering using the mouse over a audiofile is a nice touch. (need to apply that in settings tho)
What was fun was to hover over, play, and then the music I was listening to just continue to play! (cool)
The same idea the audio designer showed when connecting to skype, if your listening to music, it auto flow into 80% lower sound so u can answer skype.
(not tested for me)

So I take it you have been able to read the hidden partition then, what file system is it and how do you read it?

No, you don't need to read it. The OS/Install DVD handles all of that. It gives you the option to Repair system at startup if it detects something is wrong.

Mkay, but this is what I do not like. Critical system files and whatnot that is hidden out of my reach. Netiher you or I know exactly what files resides there, and what they are doing. And "OS taking care of things" for me without me knowing whats going on is not satisfactory at all.

I like to know whats cooking in my system.;)

Here, with Vista installed first and Win7 dual booted on a 2nd partition, no recovery partition was created. Instead, a "recovery" folder is on the Win7 drive, containing another folder (my 2nd folder is named "3a84a266-ac60-11dd-a248-9d4b28638326"), and then inside there are two files, boot.sdi (3.02 MB) and Winre.wim (156 MB)
I think these are just used so that you can get to the recovery console or boot to a command line etc. without needing the install DVD...
Maybe theres a way to tell the setup to use folders and files instead of an unreadable partition when doing a fresh install

And if you install another operating system after Windows 7 on another drive, you can see the small 200MB partition from the other operating system.

Is this worth installing over Vista? Currently I use XP 95% of the time and Vista 5% and I'm about to Reinstall Vista like I did with XP today due to have bought a new more silent and faster HDD and want the OS's to run of this HDD. Now I don't care much about compability issues as I can use XP if that's the case but I wonder if W7 pre-beta build shows ANY performance advantage over Vista, may it be 1% or 5%.

Well Vista drivers should work for NVIDIA cards at least and prolly Intel chipsets as well and I'm using kX Audio drivers for my Audigy which I've seen a person stated in the forums got working in the 32bit 6801 build for W7. If all those 3 works it should be no prob.

I can't even get this thing to install. After I click "Install Now" button I keep getting the errormessage "windows could not collect information for [OSImage] since the specified image file [install.wim] does not exist". Seems like I'm not alone about this problem. And yes the install.wim file exists in the sources folder on the DVD. I'm trying to install from booting from the DVD. I'm using vLite on it though and got it down to only 1.13GB in size as people have successfully used it with this build but I think one of the components "manual install" causes probs if removed and I'm pretty sure I selected this for removal so gonna try again.

EDIT: Worked like a charm this time when I redid the vLite slipstream and kept Manual Install and still got the setup down to a decent 1.26GB on the DVD. Like the OS so far, it even changed to 1280x1024 @ 85Hz in middle of the setup (even Vista didn't so I had to whitstand the painful 60Hz on my CRT until setup was finished) and also it automaticly installed NIC drivers for my onboard marvel NIC which Vista didn't either so that's nice.

Hi All,
Have someone tried to run 9800 GX2 under Windows 7 x64?
When I run games or benchmarks PC get freeze. After many attempts with drivers (currently with 180.60) I decide to disable SLI in CP and all games and benchmarks get start to work perfect but only with one core and slowly of course When I enable SLI problems start again.
I've found information by google that Windows 7 will not support Hybrid SLI and Cross fire (which is very stupid I think), but in my case this isn't Hybrid SLI, am I right or it's the same.

I've tried 180.48, 180.70 also (2 times), but situation is the same, just with 180.60 I have better results in games and I keep it for now.

If someone with Win 7 who have possibility to try with 9800 GX2, I'll be very thankful. If I'm right I have to go back to Vista x64.

Edit: Ok, I've found the problem. It comes from display drivers. Two cores work only with FW 178.14 integrated in Windows 7.

I installed Windows7 Pre-BETA (6801) on my Lenovo ThinkPad SL-300..
And the operative system itself seems to be incredibly stable for a Pre-BETA (aka Alpha) version!

Only downside is I've got some huge problems with getting all my drivers installed :(
Is not that the drivers don't work, as we all know 95% of the current Vista drivers should actually work perfectly with Windows7, the main issue it how to get the in there?!

My Webcam, GeForce, Realtek LAN NIC and some other drivers installs without any issues!
But the Intel chipset, Intel Wireless NIC, Intel Matrix and some Lenovo system drivers refuse to install on Windows7?!

It's not the drivers being the problem, it's just the install that has be created in a way so it wont install on anything other than Vista 64bit :(
It wasn't that hard to get the wireless running though, first of all there was a default driver loaded, second all I had to do was doing the "Device Manager - Update Driver" thing, which worked for both the Intel SATA and Wireless driver..

The chipset driver on the other hand isn't going so well, as the Intel chipset driver isn't "downloadable", you just have this tool that identifies your chipset and then get you the drivers from Intel, and this utility refuse to run on Windows7 so I don't get those bloody *.inf files at all? :(

Same problem with some of the Lenovo drivers, I made some of the work with that "Device Manager - Update driver" thing, but not all of them worked as some of their drivers are located within som data.cab files, and the extraction of those only stars during the installation, which of course wont start on Windows7! The ATK0110 won't install either..

It's not always that easy to do "Device Manager - Update Driver" either, as some of the hardware listed in Device Manager just says "Unknown Device", which isn't telling me a lot..

Anyone got some tips / workarounds on how to get the Intel Chipset (I'm running GM45 / PM45), Lenovo ATK0110 and the Lenovo system drivers installed? Would be much appreciated :)

Man, if drivers refuse to install due to "unsupported" OS, run them in compability mode for "Vista RTM" for example and it'll work. That's what I did for Intel chipset drivers. Dunno if it will work for Lenovo drivers but do you really need them?

I just updated the post for the current internal build at Microsoft.

**News** (about build 6954)

Until now comes Windows 7, Windows Vista without a true "boot" Therefore, as we see it from earlier versions of Microsoft's operating system know. In current internal builds is now but a new startup screen.

The new boot screen is the information our sources indicate that in the currently widely used internally at Microsoft Build 6954 included.Whether he is also in other recent pre-release versions that are not in the public domain, available, was not clearly understand.

The information available to us that it is a colorful, animated startup screen. This allegedly shows some colored balls or elements which can unite Windows logo.Whether this new boot screen in the final edition of Windows 7 existing, is not sure.

Microsoft also apparently wants the manufacturers of finished systems can give the boot as needed to replace or at least adapt. Depending on what the respective vendor PC with preinstalled Windows 7 comes, so we will probably start on different screens encounter.

This is likely part of Microsoft's strategy to create greater individuality among the OEM systems.

well thats the thing - vista *cant* do 2 diff v.card drivers due to.. WDDM1 I think its called.. apparently W7 has WDDM2 or something & thus *can* - I just want to confirm :)

<------ This guy, NOT IMPRESSED with Windows 7 at all. It is identical to Vista, only with some speed tweaks and extra features.
I say BOOOOOO TO MICROSOFT!!!! I think I will stick with Linux.

Yea same, I had hoped for even 1~3% performance increase but no, all benchmarks I tested was like less than 0.5% different to Vista. Not that I had hoped for much but since even Sevice Packs have provided small performance gains in the past I had some hopes Win W7 vs Vista had some unseen performance change but nope that wasn't the case... :p: First I tested 3DMark06 for example and it gets ~13.750 score in W7, exactly same as Vista but with XP I get ~14.300 and it's usually the same in real world tests, slightly lower FPS by 3 - 10% or so except FarCry 2 which is the only game so far that I've tested that runs faster in Vista/W7.

Worse 3D Performance and crappy sound (with my sound card anyway but the sound is more than good in XP) are the major things y I won't use Vista/W7 as main OS for some time. A lot more fun playing games with excellent sound in XP whereas in Vista/W7 it sounds slightly more "integrated sound card like" ie, not as good surround sound and less depth and lack of bass response (in XP I can raise bass levels like 4 - 5x the times Vista/W7 before getting distortion so if I want to I can get bass like I'd have a subwoofer attached to my ears but that much of a bass fanboi I'm not but nice to have it there if wanting it ;)) and since I'm a high FPS gaming lover (100Hz / 100 FPS optimally) I want stuff to run as fast as possible.

i have 6956 too, and tbh i'm not rly seeing much diff to vista with regards to mem usage.
because superfetch is still running, it will still cache all the available mem after running the os for a lil while

The pic of my memory usage was after install. Then I had to install driver and ulties and such.
