I was so looking forward to Dead Space on the PC, until i found out it was infected by SecuRom...
However, i have a cunning plan, my lord </baldrick>
Purchase the Game - but dont even unwrap it. *snip* That way, you've paid for the game and you have a license to use the one you've downloaded that consequently has no install limit or 'ET Phone Home' crap tacked onto it.
What do you reckon?
Referring to piracy is not allowed.

looking forward to the game but...I hear the PC controls suck as it was designed to be played with a gamepad (for consoles)

It looks like it's between good and great, with excellent being the best possible. That's just from taking all the review sites into account.

Still EA have everyone over a barrel with all their releases of late, and don't seem to understand we want to buy the game and install it as many times as we like, not just rent it for x amount of installs.

I'm surprised no one has commented on this game.
I played it for a few hours yesterday and for about an hour today (so far).
It's pretty crazy, it's probably the scariest game I've ever played. They did an amazing job with the atmosphere.
The ONLY thing it lacks is working anti-aliasing. Forcing it and the in game options don't seem to work.
I'm on Chapter 3 currently, plan to play some more later.

I was going to get it for the PC but after hearing that controls where shotty for the PC, went with the X360 version instead. You know to be safe, and make sure there was no incompatibilities. Gotta say its a great game IMO. I played 1 hour yesterday and just finished chapter 1, now knowing how the game goes and how the gun/options work in game im going to go through it again this time more conservative on the ammo ;)
The feeling of the game is great imo, story seems good, but one thing I do not fully understand is why does the engineer have this fancy suit to begin with? Guessing so he can go into environments that are nice.

The control are shotty?
I'm playing the PC version, and it controls fine in my opinion.
Now, it is obviously designed for consoles, and you can tell that at certain points, but it certainly doesn't control poorly.

About the control worries:
This is due to the bad Vsync implemented into the game. It is enabled by default on all systems and is buggy. It seems to use software mouse and thefore lags the controls.
The reviewers were either too lazy to bother looking into the options, or were not knowledgable enough to realize that Vsync may cause input lag in some cases.
Worry not - disabling the ingame Vsync gives you perfect mouse and keyboard controls.

Well, I just beat the game on Medium.
The last boss was pretty much a joke, in my opinion.
There are some cool unlockables you get, the Military Suit, 50000 Credits, 10 Power Nodes, and Impossible Mode. If you reload your saved game, you can play another round with your unlockables and all of your previous equipment.
I have yet to hear if there is anything special about beating Impossible Mode.
mine just arrived.... I just have to ask... am I the only one that hates the idea of having the character walking on the far left side of the screen at all times?!
I feel "stuck" on screen. Can't really describe it but it just feels really really uncomfortable.

I'm with you, GoW like steering dosn't work here really. They should've made it an FPS...
Regarding PC version controllers:
It's not bad but mouse sensitivity drops ~50% when entering "aiming mode" which doesn't make any sense :/
PS. Does the game get scarier later on? I'm in chapter 2 and there isn't much going on...

Well after the first hour I am getting used to the idea and can almost ignore his position on screen.
As far as the game getting scarier, no idea, I am still on chapter 2 too..
One thing that I was impressed with are the load times...why can't all games load this fast? :p:

Completed!
Took me ~14 hours, mainly "thanks to" fetch quests and revisiting earlier areas.
By the way, did you notice how similar to Bioshock this game is? We're in a "city" far away from any civilization, it's inhabitants mutated into blood-thirsty beasts, audio logs are scattered all over the place, Ishimura even looks somewhat like Rapture [colour-wise] and final boss battle sucks...
When you finish the game write what was your favourite/most used weapon, I'm wondering if I was the only pearson who used Plasma Cutter pretty much all the time...

What res are people running this at, and at what details?
I started today, played about 1hour. Playing @ 1920x1200, high details, aa on.
I also donīt really get it why the character has to be on the left side of the screen all the time but after i a while you kinda ignore this.
The controls are pretty much ok for a game that is mainly supposed to be played on xbox360, ps3. Maybe iīll also test is with my old usb Ps2 Controller ;)
And i think itīs not as scarry as Condemned 2 for now but i think it has some big potential^^

Is there any way to switch on AA? It doesn't seem to work :S
I just enabled it in Catalyst Control Center and doesnīt let the application control it, but donīt know if it really works..

AA doesn't work on this game. Tried different combination 4x/8x/Box/Edge, but AF seems to work. I see why they have the viewpoint the way it is. Wait till you get to the area where you first do a gravity jump, its pretty cool.
The graphics kinda suck, there are some textures that look better in Doom 3,the game runs fluently 50-120FPS @ 1920x1200 16XAF.
The FOV is whacked but I think they did it to add more depth into the game,a bigger FOV means catching a glimpse at what's around the corner and you err.. they don't want that otherweise it's a pretty good game, love the strategic dismemberment and the promotional stuff behind the game is also nicely done 6 comics and a full lenght movie which is quite decent and helps you get more details about the story.

The ONLY thing it lacks is working anti-aliasing. Forcing it and the in game options don't seem to work.
It uses deferred shading. Like in stalker.
No AA available yet.
completed :D
took me forever... no vsync + stupid FOV + character position on screen = me having some serious headaches. (no joke)
ran it on 1920x1200, high. as others said, low res textures = no lag.
and yeah, disable vsync and the input lag is gone BUT....this has got to be the WORST controls I have ever played on. I enjoyed the game, but seriously, the controls drove me nuts and there were many times I just wanted to give up. the whole time I couldn't help thinking "this game would kickass if the controls were better/smoother"
It just becomes very frustrating when you know you are hitting the right keys but nothing happens and you die over and over. Try not being able to reload while running when you are locked in a tiny room with 5 monsters that are apparently loaded on anfetamines and are 10x faster then you. :shakes:

Interesting thread. Sounds like this is definately worth a look after I am done enjoying Fallout 3. A System Shock atmosphere is always good gaming... Its disapointing that these console ports have so much potential in some cases, but control issues always seem to be a a common problem. :shakes:

As mentioned in the other topic:
You have to see the animated movie: Dead Space: Downfall (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1267379/). The game is like a sequel to that - makes more sense that way.

Hugely frustrating bugs. Impossible to play this game, as viewpoint is constantly dragged up and to the left, meaning when I'm not moving my mouse down and to the right I'm looking at the ceiling and spinning in circles. Furthermore, about the bottom third of the main menu is off-screen, despite resolution being correctly set to native, meaning I can't even properly configure things. Mouse movement in menu is "normal" (ie. not dragged up and left), but so laggy that it's a PITA to control, and added to that the game doesn't seem to register any mouse movements below a certain movement threshold, so I have to make huge sweeping movements to get the cursor to go anywhere. When it does eventually move, it's not like this is a scaling problem (so the cursor only moves a small distance for large movements), it goes spastic and jumps completely across the screen.
Uninstalling until a patch comes out. Dead Space is an apt name, that's all this POS buggy port is right now. Good job EA.

Dude do you have any controllers plugged in? When I first opened it it was doing the exact same thing too. I unplugged one of the controllers out and it stopped. I have found no other bugs with this game so far and I'm at chapter 7. It's a really good game.

I'm in chapter seven also but I quit playing it when I got Fallout 3. When I get tired of FO3 I will go back and finish it. It really is a good game. The controls take some getting used to but they aren't that bad and I think the graphics look pretty decent with everything maxxed. Make sure you have the mouse sensitivity turned all the way up in the controls.
Turning is the biggest problem in this game and when you aim your weapon or if you are moving, the turning becomes extremely slow. Try to make turns before you aim, do your shooting and release aim to turn again. Oh, the other thing is you have to play with Vsync disabled.

Also tried fiddling with the joypad file, no change. If you read their forums a lot of people are in the same boat as me, and neither of these fixes helps either.
In any case, neither of these fixes is reputed to do anything about horrible mouse control and sensitivity or large chunks of the main menu being off-screen - and yes, vsync is disabled.

I had two controllers plugged in: a Logitech PS controller and a Genius one. When it started the camera was spinning like you said. After thinking about it I thought that maybe a stick was pressed somehow so I took the Genius controller out and bam no more problems. The menu is fine too now. I dunno what to say though, you have other stuff in your USB ports? Just unplug them all and see if it still does it...

Not that I don't appreciate you trying to help, though :) - I've just spent the past day trying to get it to work, Googling and forum-ing and every suggestion does nothing. It's not just me, either - as I said above, the unplug-stuff fix only seems to help in about half the cases.

I have noticed this game was extremely sensitive to my GPU overclock. For 2 years now, I have run my 8800gtx at 660/1566/1080 with no problems in dozens of games. At these settings I was getting bluescreens and hard reboots after about 5minutes of playtime in Dead Space. Lowering shader domain by 20mhz or so cleared everything up. No crashes since in about 8 hours of game time.
Just very odd.. hope this might help some others who experience crashes with this game. Again, I concidered my GPU overclock rock stable with no reason to suspect otherwise- I could loop 3Dmark for 12 hours and never had issue with literally doenzs of other games. FWIW however- I did have very minor artifiacting (1 or 2 artifacts every 2 min or so) in ATITool with my above settings so I guess I shouldbt be surprised there is a title out there that would object to these very borderline anomalies. The only thing that lead me back to this as the culprit was the nvxxxxx.dll file that was causing the bluescreen.
Also, I notice this game keep all 4 cores on my CPU at about %75 load.. which is nice to see...
anyhow... banter /off
Dead Space is a great game... really enjoying it.. just starting Chapter 4...

To the people who have that mouse issue, you can try turning ON the vsync in-game, and then in your CCC panel or whatever you're using, lock the refresh rate.
After i did this, i don't get the slow-mo mouse movement in aiming mode.

Even since they had a few people form System shock2 work on this game, it still sucks, just like Bioshock sucks.
Dead space and Bioshock are two great examples of how great games like System Shock 2 could be dumbed down to have amazing graphics, yet exceedingly shallow gameplay. Thank you, Xbox!
But Dead Space is a bit more enjoyable than BioShock, which doesn't say much.
That way, you've paid for the game and you have a license to use the one you've downloaded that consequently has no install limit or 'ET Phone Home' crap tacked onto it.

Referring to piracy is not allowed.
I'd just like to point out, if anything is downloaded through a p2p network, it's automatically shared with seeds, so it's legally equivalent of you copying your retail game and giving it freely away to anyone who desires on the internet.

I think this is a great game. I disabled vsync to remove the input lag, and bought a 360 controller just for my pc, and I havn't had any complaints with the controls this way. Everything works as it should. maybe u just need the 360 controller or something.
I really like the game, and yes it does remind of Bioshock, although it's much better imo, as it doesn't have that cartooney feel and things are just scarier and harsher (actually I didn't like Bioshock). It feels a bit like it's influenced by the 'Aliens' films, The intense feel and the art direction. The sound is amazing, the weapons are great. The monsters are good, and their are a lot of variants.
I havn't finished it yet but am 3 quarters into it. My issues with it though, are there are a couple of pointless boring bits where you have to operate a cannon to shoot astroids, and a few bits where you have to solve boring puzzles or run across the ship in vacuum. To me these bits really spoil the flow and quality of the game, and ruin the perfection of it. But they're not too many, and i guess some people will like them.
My other fault with it is the graphics- they are pretty good in some ways- It does look very nice at times, But it's annoying that I cant run propper AA and the in-game AA is poor and only 2 or so. Some of the texuters are low. I'd like to be able to turn on vsync- some people can force it on in their control pannel, which aparently still doesnt cause input lag- but my ati won't let me force. The problem with no vsync is that if there are lots of flickering strobe lights, it just looks bad as you see lots of black lines down the screen, but this isnt that often anyway.
It would be scary if i got scared, but i don't scare easily. My friend had a go and it made him jump though lol ( a corpse he was looking at suddenly got up off the floor and snarled at him).

My own clone.
It runs like a champ on my system and I had no problems with the controls after I got used to them in Chapter one. In fact I like the over the shoulder view better than the first person view. It allows you to be more personal and relate with the character better when you can constantly see him.

Keep in mind if you have problems in the game you may have troubles installing patches if your not using the copy off the DVD. I really wish they would stop screwing over the people that actually pay for the products. That may be why a lot of the stuff I purchased came off steam. As much as some people dislike it at least steam doesn't install crap on your computer and it makes re-installing stuff after a format easy.
