View Full Version : 850 overclockers - would you use this voltage?

Posted this in the videocard forum but realized this is a better place...

So, I did some more pencil modding tonight and ended up bumping my voltage slightly above the 1.4v I was shooting for. I know the agreed upon "safe" 24/7 max voltage is 1.4v, I am getting ~1.42v.

My question is, how would you feel running this voltage? Keep in mind, I use atitraytools "auto overclocking" so my 2d voltage is somewhere around 1.1v. It would only jump to 1.42v in games. I could lower my profile voltage slightly (giving me 1.37v) or redo my pencil mod. But honestly, I feel like running it at this because I am getting the core up past 880 stable. Yet, I also feel like I am being somewhat stupid....anyone been running this voltage for awhile?

One last thing. This is all watercooled and temps are not a problem (under 40c always). Thanks for the opinions!

Edit: Doh! can't fix it now =(

lol...what GPU? :)

0.02V isnt much of a deviation, it "should" be fine regardless but obviously, any increased voltage increases the risk of faster death.

I gather he's talking about HD4850 (typo in thread title).

Ahhh! I thought the poster had made a reference to opinions being based up by strength of numbers....

:)

should be fine with water and the temps. 0.02V generally doesnt do much damage

Sorry for the kick.

24/7 voltage should stick at 1.45 and not any higher. Since i bought a cheapass peak 2600pro once with the goal to overclock it at max, i archieved up to 2.15V with aircooling, which reached over 1200MHz stable coreclock. Any higher, would result in sparks on the back of the card. When the card gave me artifacts of assumingly bad memory, i just twisted open the variable resistor, up to 2.5V which was a nice black burn on the back of the card lol.

Bottomline is, keep it cool, dont mess around with extreme high voltages for a long period of time and you;ll be fine. ;)

I also have high my 4850's vgpu.
I have a scythe musashi and the card is covered with aluminum and copper heatsinks.
It is @ 1.4 playing games.(pencil mod) temps never reach 60's.
Idle is 1.22v.( all measured with dmm)
Should i take it down? or @ 1.4 it would be ok for 24/7....

I've been blasting 1.5v through my HD4850 since launch and it's fine. Runs like a champ with a Arctic Cooling S1 on it

it's a pencil mod. it will degrade and quickly. your 1.42v will be below 1.4v soon enough.
