Right now for my class (Technology Infrastructure Management) we are doing computer fundamentals, which is just a A+ course. We were going over the PSU when one of my classmate says how any PSU is only capable of outputting 280w of power. I just laughed in bewilderment as he went to say that no PSU manufacture will guarantee anything over 280w. Thing was we had a 1000w Ultra PSU up on the projector screen. Apparently he knows this because he got his degree in electrical engineering in the 80s.

I know my own system pulls way more then 280w, but there must be some kind of rational behind what he is thinking, but I can't figure it out.

He does not know what he is talking about. ;)

I am sure someone will come along and explain in more detail, but definitely not true.

He's wrong. Maybe he want to say that in ATX12V v2.xx standard +12V rail was limited to 20A (240W).

hahaha maybe thats what the theoretical PSU max power usage was back in the 80s ROFL

what a jackass

this classmate of urs sounds so stoopid.. it... it hurts.. doesnt he know simple electrical power?

Power (watts) = Volts x Amps

so what did he say when the pic of the 1KW PSU was shown?

I know my own system pulls way more then 280w..

why dont u use that to prove him wrong? get one of those meter thingys (forgot what they are called) & show him the amount of power drawn by ur PC

If a PSU (a rather simple elec contraption) cant go above 280W - how the hell does he explain all the other wonderful *household* appliances that use up 1, 2, 3+ KW?? :poke:

but there must be some kind of rational behind what he is thinking, but I can't figure it out.

tsk tsk tsk.. hotgore, u credit him to much! :D

Perhaps that was just the limit when he learnt that rule. Hopefully just an honest mistake, or you need to put him in the spotlight in class.
