i just upgraded an outdated pc with:
amd sempron 3100
80gb ide hdd
7200gs
512mb ddr400
XP SP2
to:
9600gt
160gb sataI hdd
amd sempron 3100
512 ddr400
Vista business SP1
i installed al lthe drivers i could find for the card and for vista compatibility issues but when i run FFXI online it runs so glitchy. is there a driver im missing for my 9600gt, it was oem and didnt come with any base drivers. by glitchy i mean itll run for a few seconds then stop, then run then stop then run and stop etc.
my old setup with a 7200gs was able to run this game fine:shrug:

Firstly, you are running Vista with less than 2gb of ram. At least 2gb is necessary for a pleasant experience. Not to mention that Sempron is single core. Dual would be optimal. You would have been better off not buying the 9800 and Vista Business and put that saved money towards a new processor, motherboard and ram.
If you are stuck with what you have now, at the VERY LEAST get more ram.

the 9600gt was open box oem for 75$
the vista business was free from academic alliance
atm i have a 754 socket and i looked and have not found and better processor for 754 =\

I didnt knew vista would even run with 512mb RAM.
Get at least more 512mb. Ripping vista with vlite for lower ram usage is an good idea in your case. Ram usage can be cut tremendously this way.

Agreed, you're definitely going to want more RAM than 512MB with Vista.

i upgraded to 2gigs of ram and it did not help ffxi at all. my task manager says cpu usage for the program is 18% and says memory for it is 118,000k
i have all the vista patches, and its still terrible.

you just found some memory lying around and popped it in or what?
I'm gonna blame your processor. It's not that good. Yea, it should be better with 2GB, but a PC is only as good as it's slowest part.

i rode to frys and popped it in. my cpu has a rating of 3.9

i ran FEAR demo on Maximum settings and the demo ran flawless(well 24-70fps), so there has to be an issue with my mmorpg.
i tried running Vlite but it requires WAIK to be installed, i downloaded, burned and ran it. got WAIK installed but Deployment services "not enough storage is availabl to process this command"
it says framework 2.0 is already installed and says MSXML 6.0 parser keeps getting interuppted and unable to install
am i missing something?

Try doing a post on the FFXI forums or simply do a Google search for FFXI+Vista compatibility to see if you are the lone gunman here with this glitch.

contacted the largest ffxi board with no help yet.
i also contacted the games own tech support and they proved utterly stupid and useless:
SEI POL Joseph C: Hello, --, thank you for contacting the PlayOnline Information Center. Just a few moments while I review your question, please.
SEI POL Joseph C: How can I help you today?
--: ffxi is not running properly on my vista machine even after all the vista pastches are installed
SEI POL Joseph C: You are having issues with the graphics?
--: yes, but even after i deleted and reupdated my graphics card with every available driver i get the same result
SEI POL Joseph C: What type of graphics card do you have?
--: Asus 9600GT
SEI POL Joseph C: Asus is the brand?
--: yes
--: according to the pol site 9600 is supported by ffxi
SEI POL Joseph C: I believe the only video cards that were made for the game are NVIDIA and AMD.
SEI POL Joseph C: This is what is listed on our website.
--: i was able to run other demanding games such as FEAR on my vista without it having any problem
--: it is a Nvidia card, just made by asus
SEI POL Joseph C: I see.
SEI POL Joseph C: If it is an NVIDIA card then you want to make sure you are using the right driver.
SEI POL Joseph C: The proper driver is listed on our site.
SEI POL Joseph C: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/win/win01.html?pageID=win
--: i have every available nvidia driver off their website
SEI POL Joseph C: Actually, you only need the one.
SEI POL Joseph C: Having more than one driver can cause issues.
SEI POL Joseph C: This is not wise.
SEI POL Joseph C: Make sure you only have the one driver that is listed on the site.
--: if says to download the 175.16 which i already have installed
SEI POL Joseph C: Ok.
SEI POL Joseph C: Then the next setting to check is the resolution.
--: 1024x768
SEI POL Joseph C: Make sure the game resolution is the same as your desktop resolution.
--: it is
SEI POL Joseph C: Good.
SEI POL Joseph C: Then our job is done.
SEI POL Joseph C: If problem persists, then you need to contact NVIDIA's tech support to see why the graphics are choppy.
--: we havent done anything O.o
SEI POL Joseph C: Yes, we have checked the settings to make sure that you are running the compatible video card and are running the proper driver for it.
SEI POL Joseph C: Also, we have checked to make sure that you have the correct resolution.
--: ffxi is the only game that is unable to run on the vista setup
SEI POL Joseph C: Past that, you need to talk to NVIDIA.
SEI POL Joseph C: I am not able to troubleshoot your computer past what I have already suggested.
--: what a waste of 40 minutes
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.

Since you already upgraded to 2Gb ram, ripping vista wont help you much....It would probably help a lil, but you would have to reformat in order to install the vlited copy.
I dont know how to help...You could try win xp sp3 instead.

It's amazing what a few minutes of your time in Google can turn up.
Got it running! Just copy a fully updated Playonline folder from a computer with a previous version of Windows into your Vista installation of FFXI. Recreate your profile (so it doesn't forget your password each time), and let it update forever (it'll want to check all of your files).
I just dug up dragon meat playing Chocobo Hot & Cold on my Vista machine. I've run into no quirks. XP Compatibility Mode isn't even enabled.
Before you do that though, see if you can't somehow update that stupid Play Online software. Otherwise this is your only option for the moment. It seems that FFXI and Vista don't play well together.

Man, Playonline is possibly the worst front end for a game in history :D I laughed pretty hard @ that tech support guy, thanks for posting that conversation. I don't play any more, but i'd say this is definitely a video card driver problem.
Try the whole copy + move folder if you like, but if that doesn't work i'd start going through all the recent WHQL forceware drivers and see if any of them will get it to run smoothly.
Also might sound obvious but FFXI is an extremely cpu and network intensive game, more than it is a GPU one. Ok not so much CPU instensive nowadays (it was when it was first out), but even if you get graphical glitches and slow-down, it's actually more likely to be a network related issue than anything else. Even on a £9000 PC this 5 year old game will lag to a stand still in busy areas (Besieged is one example). Are your network traffic arrows green and normal-looking (low numbers are better) at the top right of the screen when playing?
P.s what server are ya on? :)
