View Full Version : Catalyst 8.7 through 8.9 - Cannot get Quad CrossfireX to Work

I have had a rather lengthy technical support issue with AMD about my rig. They claim because I have hardware mods and software mods they will not even talk to me about it. This is bad enough.

I took my cards and flashed a stock BIOS to them and I'm running at stock speed. The only difference on the cards is that they are voltmodded and I have them at 1.675V by hardware.

Catalyst 8.6 will show me an option of 2-way, 3-way, or 4-way CrossFireX in the CCC. Overdrive will let me set the GPU and memory speed of each of my four cards.

Starting with Catalyst 8.7, and testing 8.8 and 8.9 as well (8.9 says it now supports "Quad Overdrive" in the release notes), the driver set refuses to do anything but 2-way Crossfire on my system. There is no option on the crossfire configuration panel to choose 2-way through 4-way - that pop-up is simply gone. Under overdrive there are only 2 cards. In the hardware info panel it says I have one primary, one linked, and two disabled adapters. I was under the impression that this configuration (4x 3870 cards) was supported for quad. That's why there are two CrossfireX connectors on each card, right???? This is what they marketed and I bought into it, and it was expensive!!!

I have to run Catalyst 8.6 right now in order to get all four video cards working in CrossFireX mode. What is the likelihood that AMD is inspecting the GPU core voltage in their drivers and if it is out of a certain boundary they disable functionality (like quad crossfirex)? I am wondering if I trim my pots back to 100kohm and make the card look generic voltage if the CCC will start working on Quad CrossfireX or not. I haven't done it yet, but I'm at my wits end.

Personally I think AMD removed quad crossfireX on 4 independent PCIe cards, and they are ONLY supporting it on the X2 card series now. But nobody will give me a straight answer. The MSI K9A2 Platinum was build expressly for supporting this configuration. All the MSI and AMD marketing, and even recent trade shows have pictures of 4x 4850 cards in Quadfire. So why doesn't this work for me? It works in 8.6 and stopped working as of 8.7, I think they just plain removed support for it. Anybody else happen to have this configuration who can back up my claims?

it is very possible that they set their drivers to do that, but iunno cuz I dont have voltmods *yet* but I'm also haveing probs just getting 2 way crossfire to work correctly.
