The Radeon HD 4550 is going to ship at the end of September, but some of the documents have already been found, and the architecture of RV710 have been disclosed. The amount transistor count is 242 million, less than RV730’s 514 million. This is because the HD 4550 only has 80 shaders, and the HD 4650 has 320 shaders.

There are two versions of the ATI HD 4550 - 512MB and 256MB. Both versions have a reference board, 512MB is a full hight card and 256MB is a low profile. The 512MB version has DVI/HDMI/DP output, and the 256MB supports DVI/S-Video/D-Sub outputs. Both are running on 600/800MHz(Core/memory)

Basically speaking, RV710 is a shrinked RV730, with only two SIMD (single instruction multiple date) arrays. Each of them has one texture unit. Inside each texture unit there are 4 Texture Address Units, and 4 Texture Filter Units. So in RV710, there are a total of 8 TA and 8 TF units. In addition, there is only one Render Back End and the memory bandwidth has been lowered to 64-bits.

The price of the Radeon HD 4550 512MB is roughly $49-59USD, and the 256MB version is around $39-49USD. The rival of RV710 will be NVIDIA’s 9400GT.

Should be good for running in HTPC systems that need decoding power for Blu-Ray etc.

i got a 3650 aiw for my htpc just for that, has both dvi and hdmi outs and a coaxial input, it was a tad bit pricey but its better than buying a separate gfx card and hd tuner

I thought I read somewhere that it was missing some features that other nice tuners have?
