I thought that I could register, on steam, any game that was available on steam. But it doesn't look like that's the case. You can register retail keys only from the list available at steam support, although afaik you can create a shortcut on steam for any game. The following is cut & paste from steam support:
Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam?
All retail Valve games and a number of third-party games can be registered to your Steam account. All of the following games can be registered through Steam:
* Valve CD Keys in this format: ####-#####-####
* Valve CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Alpha Prime CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Dark Messiah CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* GTI Racing CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions CD-keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Prey CD Keys in this format: AAB1BB2C345CDD6E E7
* RACE - the WTCC Game CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* RACE 07 CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Ragdoll Kung Fu CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* Red Orchestra CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* SiN Episodes: Emergence CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
* The Ship CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
Opposing Force CD-keys cannot be registered through Steam. Opposing Force was included in a retail Half-Life package. The Half-Life CD-key included in the package will unlock all of the games in that package, including Opposing Force.
Note: Only the retail third-party games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other third-party games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.
Adding Non-Steam Games to Your Games List
Games which cannot be registered through Steam may still be added to your game list for easy access - please see the Adding non-Steam games to My games list topic for more information on this process.

awww snap, i'm going to have to find another way...thanks man
EDIT!: i'm going to rip the games on my bros lappy, place on thumb drive, throw them on one of my slaves and then mount and install using DeamonTools and original cd keys. if they require a no cd crack then i will patch them. long process but it should work.

All you need to do is get an account on steam after installing steam thur the net. You can install any game that you have a key for from online. I have a HL2 disk in German language and all i did was to uninstall my German version of steam and install the English version from the Valva site and so on. People buy keys directly from valva online shop and all they do is to register with these keys to install their games. Give it a shot.

or just buy a dvd/cd drive which matches your case :') what are they now? Ģ30 tops? Would save you all the hassle of ripping, mounting + a fook load of hard drive space.

yah i tried that dude, u go to the top left part of the steam window and under games click on activate a product on steam. that then opens a window and type in the product key and click ok; for me typing in the product key for stalker results in "invalid product key" even though stalker is available through steam. as seen above the game has to be select third-party games :(

Can't believe it took so long for this recommendation.

I was using the wait and see process, all these No-CD cracks and hours of work that was suggest seemed kinda funny.

Yes I read through the first post, but the way I see it. All of the options thus far is liek saying, "Hey I want to move 3 ft in front of me, but instead of just walking 3 ft forward, I will walk around the earth going directly behind me. I will eventually get tot hat spot I want to." Both ways lead to the same outcome, but one takes a heck of a long time.

Are you going to pay twice for a game just so that you don't have to use your dvd drive?
I don't see how you can download stuff from Steam without entering credit card details etc first. If you could tick a box that says "I have a cd key already, honest ;)" that would be sweet...

You don't need to enter anything if you have a CD/DVD key which is on the list of supported titles.
Just click "Activate a product on steam" and enter the cd key exactly how it appears. Steam will automatically recognize the game and download it. =]

Positive?
I always thought that was only for Steam retail releases, such as Orange Box.

Quite positive, I downloaded and activated both Prey and Half-Life platinum collection using just my keys.
