Desiring to increase the attractiveness of its graphical solutions, NVIDIA reduced the recomanded retail prices of the following video card:
* GeForce 9600 GT 512 mb. GDDR-3-> $99;
* GeForce 9600 GSO 384 mb. GDDR-3-> $79;
* GeForce 9500 GT 512 mb. GDDR-3-> $69.

yeah the 9600 GT for 70$ will be placed in all budget system :D . but i don't think that NVIDIA may reduce the price to this level without the 55 nm

Especially the 9600GT low profile version. Hehe. I know a few people that owns console-size PCs, which is sweet.

Ext. power connector. :(
yeah but I believe it outperforms the 4670 by a bit, honestly this is a great card, I wonder if ati will drop their prices. At this point, I don't think they'll have to since they've got a large customer base now that they've got the high end, and looking at their financial situation they can't afford to anyways

Sure this outperforms 4670, but the reason why I really DO love 4670 is the lack of power connector. Some of us have (real) stupid principles. :shrug: Then again, Nvidia drivers + linux... :love: This is ripping me apart.

At $99 this is a decent competitor to the $79 HD 4670, but remember that nVidia selling a 9600GT for $99 is not good business (selling HD 4670 for $79 isn't a high margin product either, but it is better).
First of all the 9600GT is a much larger die (~240mm^2 @ 65nm) and also the PCB is much more complex with the 256-bit memory bus.
It's the same thing with the 9600GSO at $79 - the 9600GSO is a decent competitor for the HD 4670 (although overall the 4670 is better IMO), but it is based on a 324mm^2 chip and has a 192-bit bus (more complex than 128-bit for 4670).
nVidia can compete, no doubt, but the issue is making money. I'm not sure that selling a 9600GSO for $79 is making money for nVidia or their partners.

first shrinks with 55nm G94 will ship shortly, so i think that step is also there to get rid of the 65nm inventory. :yepp:

because it's a rip off when you compare it to other cards like the 8800GT or 4850.

I believe the current competitor for the 9600gt is the hd 3850 and hd 3870. Both can be had under $100USD on the egg beater.
Palit 3850 $89.99

I agree with whoever said it: with the razor thin prices, it's a pretty good conclusion to say that nvidia is making profits for partners razor-thin.

man, that's a nice price for an add-on physx card. the Ageia card still costs 120 bucks on Newegg where as the 9600gt is 3x the performance for 20bucks less. too bad its limited to Nvidia cards

Well, 9600GT is w/o any direct competition at the moment, except HD3870. HD4670 is overall a little better than 9600GSO in performance, plus is shorter and have an lower power consumption. HD3650 blows up the 9500GT that was put against it, and the TDP is the same. Seems AMD win for me.
Then again, Nvidia drivers + linux... :love: This is ripping me apart.
This year, the proprietary ATI drivers for linux became much better, and the open-source driver is going well with the help of AMD. You can already play some games in R500 cards, and probably R600 suport will come soon. You can see the progress at phoronix:

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_r500_mesa_catalyst&num=1
Meanwhile, Nvidia let KDE4 users stucked with horrible ununsable performance, even w/o 3D desktop...

3870 is still more for the money, and the 4670 should beat it in AA+AF, additionally 30$ more and you get a 4850 which tears every 9800series card apart :rolleyes:
nvidia offers almost no competition in the 0-200$ market, at any price point the amd cards offer more or the same value...
amd pwns nvidia more than nvidia did 1 year ago because back them amd had some nice products in the sub 150$ range
i hope that nvidia gets their act together in the next few months, but all these shrinks don't look like they're going to change the situation

Actually, FYI, 9800GTX still competes well with 4850, as it is meant to. Also, 3870 and 9600GT trade blows, which is specifically why they are evenly priced.

Too bad that SLI chipset is expensive , Such card will be good enough for SLI or as physic accelerator , or even as additional card (too bad that NVIDIA do not allow card mix for SLI).

Anandtech in their review of 9800GTX+ and HD 4850 give their preference for HD 4850.
9800GTX+ is old tech refurbished. The new tech is GT200 and thatīs the real competitor to HD 4800 series.

It doesn't matter how old it is. What matters is that it still beats the (much newer) 4850 (in many games) and oc's at least 200 mhz on the core alone.

Er, no it doesn't, especially not at 4xAA or 8xAA.

And the IQ, well, this come as a truly personal opinion, but i'm really happy going back to the red camp with HD 4870 after using both 8800 GT & GTS for about 10 months combined, can't replace the need of great IQ that ATi has consistently provided since my first encounter with them back in 2003, using Radeon 9100 up to X1950 XTX, if the FPS is already sufficient (exactly the opposite reason why i went with G92 over RV670, beside the stupidity of local ATi AIB distros that priced RV670 card uncompetitively back then).

Now i'm hoping the price drop hasn't affected the UK yet as I can get a 9600GT (650/1800) or a HIS IceQ Turbo 4670 512MB (780/2000) for Ģ68. Trying to upgrade my little brothers PC from a X1900 Pro & can't decide which to go for.

ATi still hasn't addressed the gap beetween HD 4670 and HD 4850 -especially in my country, RV670 solution just isn't competitive performance wise (i hate game without decent amount of AA and AF applied).

QFT.
The 4850 excellent combination of value and performance is astonishing but a lot of people really can't go over, let's say $120. Nvidia dominates that segment with the 8800gt (now 9800gt:rolleyes:). In terms of speed it's much closer to the 4850 than to the 4670 but it's priced right in between.
