That means you have been running a lot of applications since you installed Vista. You can clean it but it's not recommended since that is Vista's secret for application compatibility. You have stored there a massive library of .DLL-s, even different version of same .DLL for compatibility both with old or new. The think is, the more application you install, the more will it grow. The reason behind this growing: it puts there every new version of a .DLL or even a new .DLL encountered in different applications (like games for example). So if you start deleting those .DLL's you might have problems with different applications making both Vista and the applications used unstable.

i had found that on MSDN, but i cant find a way to clean it, and it grew without me installing anything recently so im vary confused, it might be viral now that i think about it

The only way to clean it: you have to unreg the .dll files which you want to clean and then you can delete them. But I personally wouldn't recommend that since you might get incompatibility problems with some applications that use a certain version of a .dll file.

Here's a personal quote:

"WinXSX" is one of the causes behind this danger. That directory is a massive library of .dll files which they constantly update whith every new application installed (that why it grows in size) for compatibility purpose. Some registry cleaners aren't capable of understating that and they delete the registry value of old or recently installed .dll files. That could lead to applications incompatibility or SO instability.

i reinstalled and i have about 3GB by default but i installed devil may cry 4 and it went to 8.5GB so that game has almost more compatibility than the dvd size

The WinSXS folder is a mystery to me. I know why it's needed, but I just dont understand why it gets sooo much bigger with just one install, like zanzabar describes.
Any clues?

And, just to make your life even more miserable, the file will increase in size almost daily....having a gigantic HD will help...it seems to me that sooner or later (especially if your Vista partition is not enormous) the HD will stuff itself to its own knees once the folder eats up most or all of the remaining free space....

I still keep going back to WinXPPro 32 bit (I have Winxppro 32/64, Vista Ultimate 32/64), although I like the Vista 64 bit and the 8gig ramski, I am still using my WinXPPro 32 bit for daily runnings, stable, comfortable, nary a problem....don't get me started on the 64bit version of WinXP (not really based on WinXP), one has to make consessions (at least I did), and several of the vendors I have contacted RE: Winxp64 drivers have responded with a huge NO, so one must compromise, ferget it or move on to Vista....

I think MS just stubbed their toes with this one, big stubbage...

laterzzzz....................

The thing is that the folder was never that big for me.
It started at 3.3 GB and never exceeded 4 GB.
That's another mystery, why does it get so big on just some systems?
Is it 64-bit related, or is it because I kept /Windows on one 12 GB partition, and /Users and /Program files on another?
Was it that Vista put less fewer files inte /WinSXS because of the restricted space?

Does Server 2008 behave the same way?

Mine is 9 Gb - most .dll files come from games, other from applications. When I insatled Vista 64, I fought 40 Gb would be enough so I made a 50 Gb partition. I have 19 Gb left and no games installed on C:\. Even If I uninstall some games, the .dll files still remain ( same .dll - 3 or 5 versions). If cleaning them is not a solution and future games will use different version, changing the size of partition C:\ might be the only solution (100 gb might be enough for next 5 years). :)

Try Windows XP; it cleans up after itself.

Read my last posts, cause here we're talking about oranges and you say "grapes or better". This topic is not about XP vs Vista.

This could be a solution for WinSxS (http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19235) - a risky one, nut since it's the only alterative some might be desperate enough to try it. I know I will, when it grows larger and have to reinstall it and resize it (by that time, there will be nothing left to loose). :)

Nice. And really doesn't look risky at all.

But when you look at it from any level higher than NTFS driver then the files are there.

On some pirated versions they have that removed with vLite, we're talking about the original, as in default one. :)

over 12gb here... ludicrous. I had no dll compatibility probs that couldn't be fixed in windows 95/98, and none i even remember in XP...

Interesting. I didn't know that this could be done with vlite. Does anyone know what the con's to doing this are? That damn winsxs folder is plain reckless BS on behalf of MS.

You might experience some software compatibility issues...But very, very rarely. For a server 100% no-go. For a home computer - OK, but still I would think twice whether these few gigs are worth potential issues.
And probably decide that they are. :D
