View Full Version : 8k5a2+ --> NF7-S = lower o/c :(

The other day I replaced my excellent Epox 8k5a2+ with an Abit NF7-S... I didn't change any other hardware.

I have been able to run my pc2700 corsair/ocz mix in dual channel mod with more conservative timings but my overall o/c is lower with the Abit motherboard.

On the 8k5a2+ I would set the Vcore and get the set value (and then some). On the NF7-S the Vcore is substantially lower than what is set in the bios! I figured with the extra 4-pin 12v adapter on the NF7-S, the Abit board would be better able to regulate the mobo voltage...

Well to make a long story short... my previous results with the Epox were 1700+ @ 2.5ghz (15x166) with the memory at 2,2,2. With the Abit mobo I'm maxing out at about 2.45ghz and more relaxed memory timings. Also the Abit board runs the CPU significantly hotter (8-10c)… I’ve seen the CPU hit 65c!!!!!

I've tried bios versions d1.0, 1.4, 1.7 and 1.8 on the NF7-S with little difference in max o/c and temperatures.

I’ve got better benchmark results (3dmark/aquamark) with the NF7-S but I've lost 50-100mhz in o/c'n... what gives?

Any advice would be appreciated.

p.s. I will try single channel memory tonight.

well I wouldn't get all worked up about the temp difference b/c each motherboard will read temps differently.
Also the NF-7 is a notorious under volter for vcore, try bumping up the vcore like 0.025-0.05 past where you had it on the epox to see if you get that last bit of oc back.

Thats not uncommon.

ive lost 150mhz since selling my best 8rda+ :(

run winbond hardware doctor and prime95 at the same time and watch the vcore to see if it drops ever lower under load.

Well back to 2.5ghz (a short and curly under actually) 13x192

I guess the mobo chipset or my ram just doesn't like 200mhz.

The extra bandwidth helped me break 19K in 3dmark2001. :D

LBJGH what type of cooling do you have on the Northbridge? nForce2 gets quite toasty, I'm sure you can get that baby higher if you swapped out the Northbridge cooler with something better.

Hey Colin... I'm using the stock northbridge cooler... Abit is selling the motherboard as 200mhz fsb ready no?

I shouldn't even have to raise the voltage but I did (1.7v)

I may replace the northbridge cooler if I get some better ram...
