Found this great deal on a quad cpu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103273

Question is will it produce the same amount of ppd as a q6600 clocked the same?
I plan on building a budget quad cruncher as soon as i have the money would this cpu be a good choice?

Nope, it won't. The Q66 also consumes a hell of a lot less power with the gap being even bigger when overclocked. When you're keeping your rig at stock it'll be a good enough deal, but it's basically a no-no when you're going to overclock it.

First of all , I have no personal experience with Phenoms.
Powerconsumption is not so good and ppd is lower compared to a Q6600.

For a budget cruncher I would suggest a second hand Q6600.

if it is a pure cruncher then go with a Q6600 - 2x1g DDR2 800 - Earthwatts 380 and up on a P35 or 4X mobo and a OCZ Vendatte2 (sp?)
If for gaming then I don't know I left AMD land after I killed my WR x2 4400+ and have not looked back.

Yeah this will be a pure crunching rig, I have a q6600@ 3ghz in my cruncher/gaming rig and i love it. What would be a good board for a q6600 with 3 or more pci-e x16 slots preferably sub-150$

amd's dont seem worth it right now, you can get a Q6600 for the same price as an OEM (no heatsink) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115018

I think the phenom will do just fine @ stock and maybe a bit of a overclock but i would just get a q6600.

Crunching, intel wins.
Gaming, you won't notice the difference really.
If you like tweaking, AMD seems to win there. More than just up the FSB, give a few volts, and bam. Gotvoltage was able to tweak his phenom up to 3.4GHz stable. Fun if you are into that.

That's the general breakdown.

I have both a q9300 (3.35ghz) and a phenom 9850 (2.6ghz; haven't really tried to oc much) crunching... the phenom doesn't even come close to reaching the ppd of the q9300. my q9300 gives me on average about 17k points per day, while my phenom gives me about 9-10k points per day. so... for crunching intel is definitely the way to go.

You clearly forgot the option Intel + DFI mobo for tweakmaniacs - I got like 120 options for mem only :D :shakes:

Riptide has a quote in his sig.....

Get phenom + DFI mobo and that is even more crazy. Eleventybillion mem settings, plus all the fun for the CPU itself! I had that combo and I was like :confused2  Thing was my CPU was bonkers and I never got to really play with it, by the time I got the CPU sent in and replaced I had gotten my Q6600 because I just wanted something that I could walk away from and it keep working and not do something crazy... then I ran into stability issues with it too  I can't win :shakes:

Don't consider AMD for crunching until we see Deneb results. The initial results look promising and may make it a viable chip to sit in between the Q6600 and a Q9300 if they price it correctly. Hopefully Deneb will be able to do 3.6GHz to 4GHz on air and be a competitive option against the Q9300 which is by far the most attractive neutered Yorkfield.

Who buys neutered CPUs... xD

I'd say wait until nehalem, if nothing else it will bring down the prices of the 45nm quads and the electricity bill will say thank you.
If you really want to go the amd route, wait for the 45nm parts, the current ones run hot and are not the best overclockers plus put out less points than a Q6600.
