I plan on getting two Silverston PSU's. Silverstone and Ultra are the only fully modular PSU's I know of. Most others are only modular for everything except the motherboard connector. I found this cable

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=101&products_id=4057

for starting the secondary PSU, but this is not automaticaaly starting up off me starting the computer, so I think will limit me to what I can hook up to it.

I see that 5.25" bay secondary PSU's have a special cable that connects between your main PSU and the mobo, so that the secondary PSU will start with you turning on the computer like normal and will allow you to use the secondary PSU as if it was actually a part of your main PSU. However, I have been unable to find this cable for sale seperatly and am now wondering if it would work with a regular PSU at all.

So, anyone know where to get that cable or a better solution for automatically starting the second PSU simply by starting your computer like normal?

There are cables out there that tied the 2 PSUs together or you can do your own mod. All you have to do is take the green wire and one of the black wires from teh main connector of the second PSu and tie them in with the same wires on the 1st PSU. But you would be better off getting a single PSU that can handle all of your power needs. But here is the cable you need.

Well i'm not sure they are even sold anymore. FrozenCPU has been out of stock for nearly a year.

Thanks for the link, checked around and so far, Frozen, PPC and tigerdirect are out of stock. I am also thinking no one stocks em anymore. I wonder why.

Ok, so making my own sounds easy enough. Just since no one stocks this anymore, I wonder if this causes problems.

If I went for a single PSU, I'd get something like the Ultra 1600 or wait for the TT 1500. I would really perfer a Silverstone over the Ultra and the TT, but not sure 1200w will be enough to run all the fans, pumps, 3 vga cards, quad core, 6 hdd's as well as a bunch of USB stuff. So was gonna get 2..probably 1000w silverstones for nearly the same price as 1 ultra x3 1600. What are the problems associated with dual PSU's compared to a single PSU besides starting it up?

They probably didn't sell well to start with. As mentioned before its better to have a single powerful PSU rather then 2 lower powered units. But you shouldn't have any problems running 2.

Here is what i suggest. Get yourself a couple 24 pin main connector extention. This gives you the connectors you need to make your own. Chop one of them up so that you have the female side of the connector with only the green and a black wire left in them. Then splice those wires into the other extention. Then you don't have to worry about cutting up the cables on either PSU.

I have that Lian Li cable sitting here on a bench, came with my G70 case..
Ask around closer to home for anyone with a G70 or new LL case that is designed to handle 2 PSU's and see if they have one.
If not I'll send you this one for whatever the postage is.

I'd get the ULTRA, its better than the TT one and may be even cheaper.

An 1.2Kw should do but depending on the rig (like 3 oces gtx280, heavily oced quad, etc etc) it may run quite stressed @ load.

If money is no concern, the 1.6Kw ULTRA would run on its output sweet spot.

Just ordered the Ultra X3 1600 maybe 5 minutes ago lol

Been reading a bit about the ultra and it's been nothing but good for the X3 1000 and 1600, which is a considerable change from the last time I read reviews on Ultra's and heard nothing but horror stories. So either Ultra has paid off a bunch of pro and ameture review sites or they actually put out a very good PSU in the X3 series. Cost $389 at PPC

http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=223&products_id=22094

which is a bit more then I was looking to spend and I will still probably get a meanwell if I decide to try TEC's, but I think outside of TEC, I won't be needing anymore from a PSU then what the X3 1600 can deliver....although I found this quote funny when I was reading a bunch of old post on running dual psu's

what possible reason can you have for needing more then 500 watts? You will never make use of that....

Thats right, the ULTRA X2 series are no good, but X3's are excellent.

Post some pics/results of your monster rig when its ready :)
