Hey guys. Charlie/Littleowl just left out of work here. He was using a grinding wheel on a metal rod and got his glove cought and ripped up his thumb pretty bad. I don't know all the details but I just wanted to let you all know and keep him in your thoughts and I will update when I know more.

Not much choice polishing metal...it gets hot right away. I remember having the brilliant idea of trimming down a 36 grit disk on a right angle grinder with a utilty knife while it was running. Luckily for me the gloves were quite a bit too long, as the blade got snatched out of the holder and sliced the tips off three fingers...of the gloves. I got a little whack...and a serious wake up call...

Work: it's serious.

Hope he is not bad off...

Pins in the context of bones doesn't sound good - neither does the "flopping around" part. Your wife must have a good sense of humor. Either that or she really, really doesn't like you. (kidding, again)

Ok last update from a very very drugged up Charlie on the phone. He is on the way home. They put a pin in and wrapped it up tight and he has to deal with it till Tuesday when he goes back in and they decide if they can fix it or cut it off. Now remember he was drugged pretty good so that may be a bit off but that is what I was told. Thanks all for you kind thoughs and well wishes. Along those lines, it makes a huge difference who you have do the surgery too. Consider going someplace where you know the people are top notch. The Mayo Clinic jumps to mind or maybe Johns Hopkins. There is a hospital in NY that just does bone surgery - can't remember the name. Most of these places have hotels as part of the hospital for family or are next door to one. Most of their clientele is from out of state.

Get the name of the procedure they want to perform and then you can research it in detail. We'll help of course. If they say they want to amputate, get at least 2 other opinions. I mean if they can reattach someones fingers, then how can they justify cutting one off? Doesn't make sense.

I hope things work out well and don't bogart the pain meds dude.!!! :D

You get something similar from body surfing on asphalt. I went over the handle bars of my bike and skidded a few feet. The skin on my thighs was mostly gone and it oozed for a few weeks before it even managed to form a scab.

Yep :)
that is how it looks after you have your thumb up your @$$ or so mystic and my wife tells me :rofl:
Wow - that's even scarier than the the color photos. So what happened exactly? The grinding wheel went through the top of the thumb, severed the joint and then stopped just before going all the way through? Did the wheel head straight for the joint or did it hit one of the bones and then skid until it found a weak spot that it could go through?

Sorry for being graphic but I'm curious.

BTW, WTF are you doing typing in your condition? At least get the missus to take dictation or something. I figure they've got to be giving you at least 10mg of Percodan every 3-4 hours - in which case you shouldn't even be conscious!

Once again, good luck.

Should be no more than 1/16th inch gap on a vertical sander for just this reason and should only be used with the piece to be sanded held way back on the left side as shown in your pic.
Once you reach the center of the disk it can be pulled out of your hands.
I'm sure you know this but in case you didn't...;)
and no fing gloves used..PLEASE!
That machine should be used for wood sanding only, no metal
A grinder, either hand held, or a supported grinder that is spinning away from you is what you need for metal grinding..Those you can wear gloves with safely, not this vertical sander you pictured.
Your companies safety guy needs to get a kick in the ass for allowing that practice.

Agreed. But the fact is those sanders get a work out in a metal shop too...they just use green paper...I'm a wood guy and the metal guys would literally chase me out of their shop if they saw me headed toward their Floor Model Combination Sander. Almost got into a fight with one..I picked up a 2 x 4 and he picked up a stainless stanchion tube so I figured I was outgunnned...

Regardless even the metal guys (a bunch of coked up bikers from hell) kept their table/disk gap at about 1/8".

Anyhoo we'll do our best to distract you with obvious advice and non sequitor random pics okay?

well Dave there is more to it then that. If i know work the grinder is already being destroyed :( i wish they would let me have it though.

The grinder we have is old and needs work done to the table because it is kind of warn out.
I made the booboo of not checking to see if I could get it adjusted closer. before I started.
I use it instead of the wheel grinder because it makes a smoother finish and holds the edge longer so I don't have to do it as often.

as for the meds i have oxycodone 5-325MG (aka Percocet) take 1 every 6 hrs ( I hate taking meds so I don't take them that often)
and cephalexin 500MG 1 capsule 3 times a day
Does the percocet actually work? When I had shingles, I was taking 10mg Oxy every 4 hrs and it barely helped. Didn't even slow me down, just made me feel slightly buzzed. But if it's helping, that's great.

i will not know till tomorrow afternoon if i get to keep it all or not
What will it depend on? Are they waiting to see if the nerves start to repair themselves? The blood vessels? Please don't let them amputate without getting a second opinion - no matter how much you respect your doctors.

I'll pray for a full recovery. :)

If they can save the bone and some of the skin and tissue - here's a technique that can regrow your finger tip. (http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080812005502&newsLang=en) Longer, more detailed article here. (http://www.army.mil/-news/2008/08/28/11962-army-researchers-try-to-regrow-fingers-from-pixie-dust/)

FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- A powder that regrows limbs sounds like the stuff of fairy tales, but medical experts here are hoping they can use it to make magic happen for wounded warriors.

Doctors from the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research are trying a regenerative medicine powder in hopes of stimulating tissue growth in Soldiers with missing extremities.

"The powder is FDA approved and is already being used for hernia repairs and other applications," said Dr. Steven Wolf, chief and task area manager of clinical trials at ISR. "But it has never been used for this reason in people."

ISR researchers are working with Steve Badylak at the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative Inc., whom they found while seeking medical innovations that could benefit wounded warriors. They were particularly interested in medical advances that could aid in combating the loss of extremities, which is a "common problem" on today's battlefield, Wolf said.

"This is a topic the Army and Department of Defense are interested in because when injuries happen in war, most of them are extremity injuries," the doctor said. "With burns in particular, we commonly end up with loss of digits."

Based on studies, ISR doctors were intrigued by what they nicknamed "pixie dust," and the idea of a new application for an existing innovation.

"Since the powder was FDA approved and safe for use we figured we would try it," Wolf said. "The idea was out there that it might work for this application but it had never been tried on humans."

The "pixie dust" is far from magic. It is actually a substance, in this case, derived from pig bladder. To create what Wolf refers to as extracellular matrix, scientists take a mix of protein and connective tissue, "spin" it to remove the cells, and then mash the remaining material into a powder.

"When put onto open wound, it seems the body starts to regrow normal tissue," Wolf said.

The theory is that when the powder is applied, circulating stem cells see the matrix, stop and differentiate into whatever they are near, Wolf said. For instance, if by a bone, then the cells become bone; if by a blood vessel, then they become a blood vessel; or if by a nerve, they become a nerve.

In other words, the regenerative medicine powder acts as a stop sign for stem cells, which are undifferentiated cells everyone has circulating throughout their blood stream.

That is EXACTLY the thing i got my finger stuck into a few years ago. Same thing, It was too far away from the edge, I had a piece of bloodwood (How ironic...) about 3 inches long and .5 inch thick flip forward and down, And take my index finger with it. Took off my fingernail and the top 1/4" of flesh and a little bit of bone with it, Thankfully it didn't go up to my knuckle.

Take it easy and get well soon! :)

Still thinking of you Charlie.... My best on a good outcome.

As you probably know now, a thumb is the most important thing on your hand. You can lose a finger or three and still get by. The thumb requires some adapting....

Caveat, I'm not an MD here.....just a very experienced user of their services.....

However, based on the x-ray you posted and the pics, I'm a bit puzzled by the "wait-and-see" thing. It is clear that you ripped out the top cartilage of the joint, but it is not clear what circulation remains. Your pics looked more like a crushing injury than a cutting or "removal/sanding" injury. Crushing is the worst and cannot be repaired, usually. That may be the basis of the wait-and-see?

I've had my share of "good" accidents over the years. The "best" one was chopping my left hand almost halfway off. I was very lucky that I had one of the best orthopedic surgeons at the hospital on call at the time. I sheared tendons off bones, sheared off one of my thumb muscles, cut the major artery that supplies your hand, and sliced up all the nerves. He managed to reconnect most of it in a several hour surgery. But that was a cut, there were no parts missing. He told me I would never be able to make a fist with my left hand again, due to the tendon and nerve damage. I said no-way....I showed him a clenched fist 6 weeks afterward. He was VERY surprised. I got very lucky to have him there, worked it very hard and toughed out the pain, and got it done. I was lucky.

I have two disc sanders in my shop like the one you ran into. Like any machine, they are designed for a job, and only that job. Treated with respect, they work well. My worst accidents always came from being in a hurry and doing something the machine isn't really meant for. I've come to stop myself in those times now. I don't heal as quick as I used to....:)

My best to you Charlie. Take it easy and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions. I would hope your cutter is an Orthopedic Surgeon. Those are the folks that are best at repairing stuff like this. If he's not, don't be afraid to demand the best that your area has to offer. We think you deserve it....

Bob

I think I've told this story before, so I'll keep it short. I had an old 1966 Chevy Belair coupe. Don't ask me how, but I got my left index finger caught between the door and the chassis. It popped the nail out from under the skin. You'd be surprised how far down those suckers go. I was only a few blocks from a hospital (hospitals and drug companies are very popular here). After waiting in the ER, doctor Mengele (not his real name) sees me and decides to try to reinsert the nail. Now anyone over 40 knows that putting bamboo shoots under your fingernails was a favorite form of torture in WW2. The reason being that you have so many nerve endings there. Before doing this "procedure" the nurse takes a tongue depressor and wraps it in gauze. I ask her what I'm supposed to do with that. She says I should bite on it. Turns out that was going to be my local anesthetic!!! Dr. M. is working on me for a while and I'm sweating like a plumber's butt crack. But I don't give him the satisfaction of screaming. Finally I tell him I need a break. He decides it time to give me some Novocaine, but the bastage doesn't wait for it to kick in before he starts again. Eventually the nail grew back, but it oozed technicolor puss for at least a week.

What I hate is that when you are injured.........it as though there is a magnetic field around the area of injury and it attracts others and there fore causing physical contact.

As though others magnetically attracted straight to the area and they zero in on it like a hound on a trail.

The really sad part is that the contact no matter how slight is always accidental and results in tremendous pain.

The Murphy's law of injury and pain.

I got a pic of the xray of the pin in my thumb

here is what he told me we are going to do.
The red lines show where he is going to cut really deep and stretch the tissue from that area to the rest of the hole. Then the Green line is where he is cutting the skin and rolling to cover the hole up. then he will take a piece of skin off my forearm and recover the part that was just cut and flipped.

As long as they don't put you under, you can watch and criticize their technique.

'Hey, you're going to use a #10 blade? I'd go with a #15 myself'

I tried that once with my dentist. I had an abscess and after cleaning it and putting in antibiotic string, it had to be closed up. So he said he was going to use cyanoacrylate. I said, hey that's crazy glue. So when I asked what I should use when it wore off, he said to go buy some crazy glue. D'oh.

Edit: Oh yeah, and it looks horribly painful. I'm sure some of the people here have been through worse, but I'd be milking that bad boy for all the sympathy I could get. You definitely deserve it. Make sure you point that out to the wife. Wink, wink.

so I did my soaking tonight in soap water and was looking. WOW skin grows quick. When I was a teen, I was hauling ass on my bike, my usual riding as fast as I could to get no where. I turned up the sidewalk to clear a car turning, next thing I know, I am siting on my ass facing the same direction I was traveling, but my bike is behind me.

I sit there for a second, run a systems check, no apparent breaks or anything remotely serious.

Pat myself down, look for any blood other then scrapped knees/elbows/hands.

Seem good to go, get up, and start toward my bike.

4-5 people on the street near by are looking, two ask if I was ok.

Yeah just sore.

Get back on my bike and start riding, then I start getting the short term knee/elbow pain from slight road rash.

I head back toward home to clean up and what not, next thing I feel is a cool sensation on my ankle.....so I stop, check it out, I have 5-7 gear teeth gashes on the inside of my ankle, (my ankle scraped the main gear teeth when I flipped) they were bleeding pretty good, but didn't really hurt, so I limp home (pain kicks in now) I walk in the door and my mom asks if I was ok, so in typical teenage male (it don't hurt) I shrug and head to the bathroom.

After wiping grease and dirt off, I head down stairs and tell her I think I need to head to the ER cause the gashes were deep and I was worried about grease in the cuts.

Of course she wants to see it, and she freaks out, and starts flying all over the house looking for keys etc. Here I am telling her to calm down, I am not going to die (wrapped my ankle to soak up the blood).

Finally got it looked @, had to get a few stitches but nothing major.

Here I am "okay, I am hurt, no biggie" and she flips out.

It seems to me though, what seems like someone being rational despite injuries, others could possibly take as the injured being in shock, when in fact they are more focused and coherent then anyone else.

Pain lets you know your alive, until someone/something hits what hurts, then you wish you were dead :P.

That's fantastic news. I don't know how it is with this kind of injury, but I know that many times rehabilitation depends on how much you work at it. Although I don't know what would be involved here - maybe some vigorous thumb wrestling? Oh, I know. Tell the wife you need a Blackberry Bold for your rehab.
