As I'm sure many of you know, the NF11FX is a compressor that is used fairly regularly here, so I'm sure some of you may find these two pics interesting (these are my pictures)

what?
the shell is just to contain the refrigerant and keep the system sealed

Yup, on most if not all reciprocating compressors (besides semi-hermetics) the suction port just dumps right into the case.

the shell is also desigend to cool the oil that is thrown off the crank on to the shell where it runs down to the lower half
there are soime vids of a nl11f floting about on the web showing it runnig with the lid off i'll post them if i can find them:up:
gotcha, I had always wondered why the shell was so thick

Semi-hermetic compressors can be suction gas cooled too. Meaning the gas also runs inside the case itself. Open compressors are not cooled by the suction gas, since the motor is outside the compressor, and connected with a shaft. :)
Great pictures. :)

It must resist to high pressure when leak testing (and static pressure as well).
On rotaries, the pressure in the shell is the discharge pressure so it needs to be even more resistant :D
