i said it before and will say it again...i'm stickin with my 9800pro. pretty soon, agp will be a thing of the past anyways, and the performance gain isnt worth $200 for me. im sure im not the only one who feels this way though

I'm sticking with my 9500np. It's fast enough for me, and I can't see blowing $500 just to have a shot at the top of the orb.

Yes, I am saying this on XS, and no I don't know what I'm thinking.

I've got a 9700 Pro right now... I figure if I'm upgrading, I'm going with the best out right now and this appears to be it... This 9700 Pro just isn't cutting it anymore... my monitor can do 109Hz at 1600x1200 but the 9700 can't go over 85 :-/ Sure I could get a 9800Pro, but for just a little more I'll have an XT with 256MB and faster clock speeds... Besides I'm selling my 9700 Pro for $220 and when new cards are released, I'll sell this card for a good bit of money too I'm sure....

EDIT: Oh, and it's been too long since I've had any real chance at the top of the orb... With this card and my 3.0c I'm picking up, I'm hoping to break 25k...

only 85hz @ 1600x1200??

Mine pulls 100hz... must have a special card? hehe...

EDIT

Opp, visit www.memoryexpress.com and see what us Canadains have to pay for top end graphics.. 8-(

Svenn

The card is only rated for 85Hz, and it won't let me select anything above that...

STEvil

untick "hide modes that this monitor cannot display"

Or use something like powerstrip for custom settings.

Oddly enough my current monitor can run 1600x1200 85hz with powerstrip, but if I try to set it to that using the windows selection thing the monitor does funky colors and stuff.. 8-/

Svenn

I tried that STEvil, didn't seem to list the other modes anyway...

I would assume that the price would drop to ~$450 after only a short time in availability... say after a week on newegg or so... I'm sure ATI loves selling their own cards on their own retail front, massive profits lol. But I don't see demand staying high enough for the XT to warrant a $500 selling price.

It's a shame it costs that much :/

I know this is dumb...

but why are people suprised by the price?
the card it replaces has a MSRP of $500.

the competitions best card is also $500.

$500 seems to be the new standard for top end cards.

Because the trend of higher card prices seems to be coming more standard.... a new card release and they didn't even release a $400 card... just the $500 and $2-300...

I used to be 300 now it is 500 soon it will be 700. This has got to be one of the most expensive hobbies out there. Right along side gold coin collecting HA!

Actually, $500 has been the pricepoint of the high-end cards for a LONG time, more than several generations. The GF4 did give us a lot of cards at an extremely low price, which I guess spoiled us (and is kinda amusing, considering GF4 era could be considered the period of nVidia dominance of the market - maybe competition isn't always good after all).

The GeForce2 Ultra came out in 3Q 2000 at $500 and so did the first revision of the GeForce3 in February 2001. The GeForce3 was still ~$370 in Fall 2001, which is when I bought one.

Anyone order one of these cards yet? When will the cards be shipping?

Svenn
10-02-2003, 12:21 AM
They are shipping already... I think everyone is waiting for newegg or googlegear to get em in stock since they'll more than likely be around $450 or less there... I know that's what I'm doing... though I'm hoping we get them in stock at best buy so I get my discount and can return it if the overclocking sucks...

Svenn,
Does Best Buy accept returns with heatsinks on?

Depends on who is working... They usually just check to make sure the basic components are still there... Card, manuals, software... Seeing as they don't know much about computers or any of the cards, they probably would have no clue it was modded...

Yep but gold coins get value with time and you can sell them at a good price after whereas a vid card lost value and you'll never get your money back. I'm sticking with my ti4400 for the moment, i can play all the game so why bother

I think because mainly it's setting in with people now and becoming standard price for high end...

Just a realization of the pricetag :(

Seems like top end during 9700pro era and right before it was always $400. Then expanded to $500 with these 256MB cards. I agree it is a bad trend. They want to start strapping on 512MB ram what will they charge then? 6 or 700? :(

Maybe this revitalized competition is stretching them beyond means. These cards use some elite ram.

luihed
10-02-2003, 07:29 PM
IIRC, they should come out with ordinary 128mb rams soon..... hopefully itll be around $400 like what the 9800pro 128 was going for at the beginning.....

I was reading that it has a thermal diode that throtttles the GPU.

WTF?

Ah, but ATI warranty will cover overclocking now I guess. But we will have to figure out a way to disable that damn diode.

The thermal throttling is in the drivers I believe and can be disabled...

Btw, those cards are been delivered RIGHT NOW. Ordered one since my bro is coming back from US to Finland in the next week.

Time to sell this 9800 PRO 256MB. :D Luckily i still can get ~ the same € from this card as i pay for the XT. So get bit improved performance/oc + HL2 in that deal. Luckily i didnt preorder HL2 yet.

Not to mention a lot cooler card, this one is runnin too damn hot. And i do like the way 9800XT looks, gotta admit that.

PTK

Ps. The thermal diode is used for "allow for dynamic overclocking". See, dynamic overclocking ... if you wanna do it the old fashion way.. you can. I would call that n00b overclocker

I spent $500 on a geforce 2 ultra a few years back...

You know calculators use to cost $500? Pretty soon laptops will have 12ghz P6's and everyone will be shooting for 60k in 3dmark2009. New technology is always overpriced, but wait a couple weeks and it should be down to at least 400..

but you do get a 50 dollar game for free so its only like 450 right? Maybe I should get this :D

yes but giving a card 500 which has no pci x support is crazy i think
