View Full Version : 4 8800gt's & psu

I'm looking at either a corsair 750w TX or an ePower Zumax 850W to power 4 8800gt's. the corsair is a single rail and the Zumax is 4 rail.

will either of these do just fine? this is a dedicated folder only, no gaming. 1 hdd, 2x2gb sticks of 1000mhz and a Q6600 with liquid cooling.

what do you think?

welcome to XS, I'd choose the corsair over the epower.

is a 750w psu really enough to power a q6600 and four 8800 gt at full load 24/7? just asking, i have no idea how much such a rig will consume :)

should be, i used the calculator and it's a 650W, and that's a high estimate. i probably won't have everything i put in to it hooked up. with the 50W TX being a single rail, it should do the trick! we'll see.

Is anything going to be overclocked? You also need to factor in the pump and extra fans.

8800GT's are not quadSLI supported
EDIT: as for the OP in simple terms, yet it will be fine

pretty much if it just sits there sucking power, only productive to someone else. if it was for a company who needed the processing power, no, not a waste. but just folding proteins? a waste.

Yea I kind of agree, what advancements to medicine/treatments has folding brought? I might be in ignorance, but in my opinion it just heats up your house and sucks power. And the Corsair for sure, they are solid units.

yes, I do know what it does. "POTENTIALLY cures cancer through better understanding of how proteins fold and where the errors that cause cancer come from". I've no problem with folding in general, say with a PC that's not in use, but building one specifically for that, is a COMPLETE and UTTER waste of money.

Folding has brought nothing to the medical community, so for now, it's just a nice idea.

There, I fixed it. Nothing that couldn't have been done through other research.

Like I said. The idea is great, building a rig to suck power and solely do this, is not.

And for the actual question: Corsair FTW.
