Well, seeing as I've got a Mach I and I'm ordering a canterwood, I've decided to finally try a second PSU. Major Slaughter suggested this psu (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3147423204&category=2563) so I just bought one. Here's what I'm thinking as of now...

Wire power cord and molex splitter to psu... Connect prom fans, case fans, and my mcw50-t pelt (80w)... Think this thing can handle that? Also, I noticed it's running 13v so it's above 12v spec for fans/pelt... Would that mean that a) fans spin faster? or b) pelt runs hotter/colder?
Once I get it all hooked up, I'll have it plugged into a power strip, along with my water pump, which will be plugged into my 950W UPS (also connected: Main PSU, Monitor, Speakers, router, cable modem). Then I can flip the switch on the power strip to start up the tec/fans/pump all at once. (Btw, this was Major Slaughter's idea, I like it :D)
My other question is how does the prommy power up? The only thing connected from the prommy is the one molex then, right? All the power/reset switches don't connect to motherboard or do they?
Any other helpful suggestions to get this second PSU up and running? I've never ran with more than one psu yet so this is new to me ;)

yes fans spin faster, pelt run colder on the cold side and hotter on the hot side

it should be perfectly fine...

How about the prom? If I don't connect it to the motherboard and only connect the one molex, when I power on the psu, will the prom turn on?

yep, should do...

I run my prom (fans and all) on a £10 20watt 12v mains PSU (the sort like a phone charger that pulgs into the wall socket) so a propper computer PSU will easily handle a pelt and the prom.

To powr the prom, give it 12v and it will start to cool.

If you dont plug the reset and power leads into your board then you just press the power to your system once the prom is at the right temp.

If your paranoid about somebody starting your PC without the prom turned on then add a relay against your PC power lead that closes when the prom is turned on.
This is how I run my own system as the proms reset lead just didnt work right with all my motherboards.

How would a relay like that work?

Basically like this.

It jst stops you acidentally turning off the prom with the PC still turned on.
Or turning the PC on with the prom off.

It also guards against the cheap 12v PSU I use going wrong, as if the PSU dies and the prom stops then the PC will stop too.

You can wire all this inside the prom if you like, then use the pass through lead on the back as usual.

Hrm, if the psu is connected into my prom... and then the prom is turned on/off at the power strip... then the psu couldn't get power unless the prom was on, correct?

Nope,

If the prom is plugged into the wall socket and your press the power button on your PC your PC will start if the prom is turned off.

The idea is that your PC turns the prom on (with the 12v line) but if your running from a seperate 12v PSU this wont happen (you have to do it yourself)

What I'm asking though, is the psu is connected to the prom, which is then connected to the wall outlet... is it just a straight pass through?

its a straight pass through in mine. (240v version) I assume the US one is the same.

It works!!!

So, now the question is where to put it. If I set it on top of my current PSU, would that cause any problems?

I dont see why not

Installation successful! I am now running off of a secondary PSU for everything but my mobo, video card, hard drives, dvd-writer, and floppy drive...
